Summary
Jim Henderson is one of six guests summoned by the mysterious Edwin Carson, a collector of precious stones, to a weekend party at his country house, Thrackley. The house is gloomy and forbidding, but the party is warm and hospitable except for the presence of Jacobson, the sinister butler. The other guests are wealthy people draped in jewels; Jim cannot imagine why he belongs in such company. After a weekend of adventure with attempted robbery and a vanishing guest, secrets come to light, and Jim unravels a mystery from his past.

Marvellous
I really enjoyed this country house mystery. Some in this genre can be predictable with too many characters all wondering who done it and waffling on and on. This one was a different as there wasn't really a murder but a very interesting situation. Well written and held my attention. Just what the doctor ordered.

Shrieking narration .
Typical of this narrator , he seems to think that everyone goes about shrieking at every body else . Almost ear splitting listening through earbuds , annoying in the extreme .

I stuck with it
This book was really tosh, I'm a huge fan of Golden Age Crime Fiction and this fell well short of of the mark
The plot was really non exsistant the characters were like something out of a cartoon
I really don't see how it caused such a stir when it was first published
The language was laughable and odd in fact I kept expecting it to be a comedy but I think it was deadly serious
I stuck with it as I'd bought it and hoped in vain it might get better
One to forget i think
