Summary

I am. You are. We are Omega.

Six years ago, an alien spacecraft crashed into the remote Nevada desert, releasing a virus that killed one-fifth of the Earth's population.

Molly McManus, whose parents died in the plague, can't forgive the aliens just because they give humanity a few new toys. For Wells Marsden, a computer hacker desperate to atone for his past, the aliens might offer the fresh start he needs.

Both Molly and Wells find themselves, for very different reasons, at the Institute for the Betterment of Humanity - a prestigious facility for gifted youth to learn from the aliens. But when they discover Earth's visitors are not as benevolent as they claim, they must escape the Institute, join a mysterious resistance group known only as Omega, and save humanity from disaster - so long as humanity itself doesn't get in their way.

We Are Omega is a science-fiction adventure featuring hacking, telekinetic powers, giant alien crabs out to control the planet, and two troubled teens who just might be the best hope we have. It's a thundering story for fans of Illuminae, The 5th Wave, and I Am Number Four.

Fascinating

This book has a truly fascinating concept and an interesting way of telling its story! I enjoyed it thoroughly! The characters where well defined. The good where troubled and the bad where in some cases completely terrifying and cold. Arryn Zech did an exceptional job with the reading although I will say her Scotsman voice could use a little work! Brilliant!

Good story & narration!

I'll start with the audio element as Arryn was how I heard about the audiobook in the first place, plus I can't guarantee the book review section won't have spoilers. Sorry in advance but you have been warned!

So my usual problem with audiobooks is that the reader is incredibly monotone which usually just puts me to sleep. This was not an issue with this at all. This is largely down to Arryn's switching of accents between characters. They really brought the characters for life, aiding in the visualisation of the characters & interpreting their emotions and manmerisms. I found this aided Charlotte's character development the most (the b*tch, Molly's words not mine) & as an English person it wasn't the usual caricature OTT accent, it fit the character perfectly. Wells' Australian accent was also very good in my opinion. However the Scottish accent could use some work (sorry Arryn!), that said it was a fairly minor character so really didn't hurt the listening experience. I look forward to maybe hearing more books narrated by Arryn in the future & hopefully the sequel to We Are Omega also!

I'm going to do my best to make this as spoiler free as possible but no guarantees.

The story is good, it's not another recycled dystopian society where it's the main character vs the establishment plot line that many of this genre of book follow. I liked the alternating character perspective every chapter. It can go one of two ways with this style, but Justin executes it without repeating the same story twice from two POVs. I also quite liked how Justin withheld key information about the characters until it became contextually relevant to the story. For example you learn very early on that Wells' little sister is dead & that's caused a rift between him & his parents. Whilst you get hints throughout you don't actually get told point blank until much later on exactly what happened. Which brings me onto my next point, the pacing of the character development. You start with two very reluctant hero protagonists who don't really hit the peak of their character development until nearer the stories climax. There's no sudden unwarranted change in character from reluctance to total badass in the first exchanges with the antagonists. Both are allowed to make mistakes & grow fairly naturally in reaction to the events of the story. Finally I really liked the ending, it leaves the protagonists & the reader thinking everything is done and dusted, before giving the reader a little teaser for a potential sequel, which you'll only have caught had you paid attention in the first few chapters.

All in all Justin puts a very good spin on a very saturated genre & Arryn's delivery helps bring the characters to life and have their own identities despite all being read by one person. A really enjoyable audiobook.

Arryn the master of accents

The story is good with twist and turns but what makes this enjoyable to listen instead of read is the amazing accents of Arryn Zech she's pulls off English, French, Scottish, Russian, Australian and American and would love to hear more from her in other audiobooks in the future. Of course the Author did amazing story telling making it suitable for young Adults upwards and I hope to hear more from them in the future.
