Summary

The Drenai King is dead - murdered by a ruthless assassin. Enemy troops swarm into Drenai lands. Their orders are simple - kill every man, woman and child. But there is hope.

Stalked by men who act like beasts and beasts that walk like men, the warrior Waylander must journey into the shadow-haunted lands of the Nadir to find the legendary Armour of Bronze. With this he can turn the tide. But can he be trusted? For he is Waylander the Slayer. The traitor who killed the King...

Hard Fantasy

First of all, a superb performance by Sean Barrett. No one captures the characters of David Gemmell’s worlds so perfectly.

As for the story itself? Excellent. Truly excellent. The characters feel true to life, despite their setting. The story keeps you engaged and thrilled throughout.

Not to be missed.

Introduction of Waylander to the series.

Waylander is one of my favourite Gemmell characters, he shows the authors ability to develop characters with depth and duality.
This novel is well worth the time to listen.

A decent one

Fairly generic fantasy story. It was entertaining enough but wasn't my best read in the genre. The narrator was good.

Up there with the best fantasy books of all time.

David Gemmells Drenai series is a classic that stands the test of time.

The narration is absolutely perfect for the story.

Waylander v Druss who wins?

First we had Druss and now we are given Waylander a truly flawed yet awesome fantasy hero.Already famous amongst Gemmell fans, both will be as well know as the Game of Thrones/Lord of the Rings characters one day.

Excellent story with themes that are picked up again later in the Drenai series. Dark at times, desperate even yet suspense filled and keeps you on the edge of your seat. The book was fantastic, this audio book brings it to life even more due to superb narration from Sean Barrett.

If you love Gemmell you won't need any recommendation from me, if you haven't come across him yet (!!!) get the whole Drenai series and then listen to his other audio books too.

A Gemmell Classic very well delivered!

I won't ruin the story, but suffice to say that if you like your fantasy generally brutal with a touch of magic, you will be at home here. What is interesting to me is the choice of Sean Barrett as the narrator. His voice, deep, dark, semi brutial, stark maybe, fits Gemmells work very well. I originally ready the book in the early 1990s and enjoyed revisiting it, with Barretts delivery. As Barrett seems to be the voice of Gemmell, at least for the Drenai series, then I am strongly considering picking them all up at some point the future. I know quality, written and verbal, when I see and hear it.

Undoubtedly worth a credit.
