Summary

Sam Morpeth is left to fend for her younger sister when their mother goes to prison. But when a stranger begins to blackmail her online, she's drawn her into a trap she may not escape alive.

Reporter Jack Parlabane is indebted to a volatile source, and now that debt is being called in, it could cost him everything. Thrown together by a common enemy, Sam and Jack are about to discover they have more in common than they realise - and might be each other's only hope.

Want You Gone is the superb new psychological thriller in the best-selling Jack Parlabane series. Award-winning best seller Chris Brookmyre is at his best yet with this nail-biting story.

Critic reviews

Praise for the Jack Parlabane series:
"Exceptionally good - a knotty mystery...Brookmyre plays a cunning, careful game." ( The Guardian)
"Reminiscent of the best of Nordic Noir but with its own vivid landscape." (Renee Knight, author of Disclaimer)

Best Brookmyre in a while

While I have enjoyed every Christopher Brookmyre book I have read, none have lived up to the first one (in my case all 'fun and games until somebody loses an eye') Until now. This was a great story expertly told and read. It kept me guessing until the end and kept me on the edge of the seat the whole way through. I cannot recommend this book enough. If you have never read any Christopher Brookmyre before this, be prepared for a treat as you go back through all of his back catalogue. You will want more...

New environment, but still intrigue and excitement

Chris Brookmyre has translated his classic intrigue, dark humour and excitement into the world of cyber-crime, and has managed to make it about people, personalities, human failings, rather than the cold and impersonal presentation that the subject matter would suggest.
Jack Parlabane has a new job opportunity, giving him a chance to get his life back together and restore his reputation. Simultaneously he's being forced into thoroughly illegal activities which will destroy him if exposed.
Credible characters throughout and a story that pulls you in, makes you think, makes you laugh and sometimes has you holding your breath as you wait to find out.
Very enjoyable, loved the two narrators who delivered the story extremely well. The technical computer-wizardry aspects were an integral part of the plot, as you might expect, but they did not detract from it in any way.
I confess that on some occasions the storyline intricacies took some unravelling to appreciate the implications in terms of characters and motives, but that had nothing to do with the author!

Good but not Great

Starts off at great pace but ends up with lots of exposition rather than action.

Jack is back

Great story, Jack is back on form. I listened to another Brookmyre a while back and had to return it as it was so poor,so this was a welcome return.

I was rather anxious due to the content of the book about my online security. However it’s taught me to think before I click.

Angus King was a fabulous narrator and is Jack in my head but I was not impressed with Avita Jay. Her London black accent was comical and her Scottish was poor. Samantha’s voice was so downtrodden, it was hard to believe that she was a strong individual underneath it all.

So disappointing

This was a real disappointment- since finding Chris Brookmyre have really enjoyed his books, some I've even read a couple of times just to make sure I got all the jokes, and I've cried with laughter, but this was soooooo tedious. The Black Widow was the novel that you could perhaps compare with this but that was brilliantly plotted and moved along nicely.

For me this was so poor I eventually returned the book. It won't stop me getting his next one especially with the Audible returns policy, but if I don't have the credits I might pick something else first.

The narration, by the way, couldn't be faulted.

Clever but really an utter bore?

Others will love and I can't help admiring the skill and intelligence of the author, but really? Obvious that the writer has done his homework ... feels like an old guy getting down with the kids! Tedious.
