Story
God's identity is beyond what we could ever fully express in human words. But Scripture uses one particular word to describe the distinctiveness of God's character: the Hebrew word hesed. Hesed is a concept so rich in meaning that it doesn't translate well into any single English word or phrase. Michael Card unpacks the many dimensions of hesed, often expressed as lovingkindness, covenant faithfulness, or steadfast love. He explores how hesed is used in the Old Testament to reveal God's character and how he relates to his people.

Jesus Unbound is an urgent call for the followers of Jesus to know Him intimately because the Gospel is not mere information about God, but a transformational experience with a Christ who is closer to us than our own heartbeat.

Imagine what it would have been like to be a follower of Jesus: first-century Christians walked away from their old lives just to be where He was. What they learned, sitting at His feet, was discipleship. And when His work on earth was done, first-century Christians took His words and example and spread out, teaching the gospel to everyone. The good news is that we, too, can participate in this lifestyle.

We live in a time when our culture is becoming increasingly shallow, coarse, and empty. Radical shifts in the areas of sexuality, ethics, technology, secular ideologies, and religion have caused the once-familiar landscape of a generation ago to be virtually unrecognizable. Yet rather than shine as a beacon of light, the church often is silent or accommodating. This isn’t a new phenomenon. During World War II, pastor and theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer was deeply troubled by the compromise in the German church.

Story
Some days we wake to a world of crystal skies and bright possibilities. And other days it's to rain pelting our windows and thunder rattling our roofs. How can we stay strong when the storms of life hit - when a spouse leaves, a client sues, unemployment strikes, or our dreams fail to come true? Is it possible not just to weather these trials but to bound back even stronger through them?
Summary
What difference does it make that Jesus was Jewish?
In this unabridged audio download of Walking in the Dust of Rabbi Jesus, Lois Tverberg challenges listeners to follow their Rabbi more closely by reexamining his words in the light of their Jewish context. Doing so will provide a richer, deeper understanding of his ministry, compelling us to live differently, to become more Christ-like. We'll begin to understand why his first Jewish disciples abandoned everything to follow him, to live out his commands.
Our modern society, with its individualism and materialism, is very different than the tight-knit, family-oriented setting Jesus lived and taught in. What wisdom can we glean from his Eastern, biblical attitude toward life? How can knowing Jesus within this context shed light on his teachings for us today?
In Walking in the Dust of Rabbi Jesus we'll journey back in time to eavesdrop on the conversations that arose among the rabbis of Jesus' day, and consider how hearing Rabbi Jesus with the ears of a first-century disciple can bring new meaning to our faith. And we'll listen to Jewish thinkers through the ages, discovering how ideas that germinated in Jesus' time have borne fruit. Doing so will yield fresh, practical insights for following our Rabbi's teachings from a Jewish point of view.

A new added layer of understanding.
The book is well written, easy to understand and concise. The narrator is very clear and enthusiastic.
There is exploration behind the words of Jesus, and his biblical teachings as they would have been perceived by a Jewish audience at the time, and how they can relate to our lives and practises today. Sounds as dry as dust but it was so interesting that I am going to listen again, this time with a Bible by my side to make the experience deeper and more immersive. I am definitely looking at the application of my faith in a new light due to the contents of this book.

Excellent for the Jesus thirsty follower
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
With the belief that the bridegroom is coming, I am making every effort possible to know about about the groom. Ann gives us great insight on understanding the Jewish culture and how it pertains to our closed minded western view of the world. The ignorant are not ignorant because they don't desire knowledge. They are ignorant because they don't know that they don't know. Well, I have been ignorant to MANY things.
This book opened my eyes to a broader spectrum of knowledge. I will never read the bible the same again. Keep in mind, she does put her opinion in from time to time, but based on the Hebrew language and understanding of alone, helps me to better receive what I am writing. Wonderful Read!

Great New Insight On Familiar Teachings
If you could sum up Walking in the Dust of Rabbi Jesus in three words, what would they be?
Just finished chapter 9 of this book today, a chapter on praying with "chutzpah." Lois Tverberg provides some great new insights for familiar teachings of Jesus. After providing some helpful historical, linguistic and literary context information, she offers VERY relevant practical applications of these familiar passages in ways you may not have considered before. Walking in the Dust of Rabbi Jesus has added value to my understanding of Jesus' teachings. And, the book has challenged me towards spiritual growth in important areas. I still have about six more chapters to listen to (purchased the book on Audible.com), but at this point, I am loving it!

Listening to this book was a true joy. Lois Tverberg's writing draws you in and educates without boring you. I've long since been a fan of Pam Ward's narration style and wasn't disappointed this time either. Pam puts just enough emotion into her reading that it feels human, but not so much that it feels like a dramatization. This was a VERY dynamic combination!

Trite recollections with little scholarship
Would you try another book from Lois Tverberg and/or Pam Ward?
Tververg no, Ward maybe
What do you think your next listen will be?
A more scholarly treatment from Jewish perspective of the life of Jesus
Which scene was your favorite?
Too few to recollect; stopped listening 3/4 through book
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Walking in the Dust of Rabbi Jesus?
Cut out the personal analogies (ie, praying for her cat) and stick it rabbinical interpretations of the life of this Jewish peasant

Satisfy the desire to follow Jesus in the deepest, fullest way we can!
I am constantly humbled by my lack of knowledge of the life of Christ and the richness and fullness of the Jewish heritage he came from. This book satisfied my deep desire to understand and Live out the life of Christ to the best of my ability. I find the details explained in this book regarding the meaning behind Jewish customs, The political and religious culture of the time, and especially the multifaceted meaning behind each Hebrew word Satisfied a thirst in me for closeness with Jesus, and renewed thirst for more.
