About this listen

Que Son Valley is actually a large area of hills and valleys just to the west of Da Nang, Viet Nam. During the 1960s, units from the US Marines and US Army engaged the 2nd North Vietnamese Division in heavy and close combat. Our mission was to keep the enemy from capturing the cities of Da Nang, Tam Ky, and Chu Lai and to pacify the area. We did prevent the enemy from capturing these vital cities, but the area was far from pacified.

Many young, brave Americans were killed or seriously wounded in these hills and valleys in the belief they were helping the Vietnamese obtain freedom and peace. Although our altruistic beliefs might have gone astray, it was my honor serving with these fine men and women. I wrote this book in honor of them and to keep their memories alive.

Critic reviews

"The author does an admirable job of telling his story...for readers interested in learning what life was like for a grunt during the Vietnam War." (John Podlaski, author of Cherries: A Vietnam War Novel)

The first time this author went on a patrol, I knew this was going to be a good book. Easily in the top third of Vietnam Vet stories. The description of the fears, anxieties, but also the appreciation of the advice from senior members in his company was brilliant. The way he described hiding in a fox hole, listening all night for an enemy during the rain was gripping, very talented ability that most struggle to get right. He's a likeable "realistic" guy, not trying to paint himself as anything he's not. The narrator, I think was one of the better, his somewhat softly spoken voice was interspersed with shouting and whispering at the right moments - the softly spoken voice wasn't at all lazy, and couldn't have been better suited for an 18 year old kid, who's getting nervous as he's going on yet another jungle hump. I'll miss him, and his 2-3 closest pals now his books over.

Well written & well read

if you're interested in what it was like to be an infantry soldier in Vietnam, this book does a good job of telling the story of a 19 year olds first and only tour of Vietnam. would recommend for anyone who likes War memoirs. especially for a free one.
