Summary

From the author of The Frozen Lake comes an enthralling novel of love, betrayal, and idealism as three very different young women go up to Oxford in the years immediately before World War Two.

Vee - the clergyman’s daughter. Boyish, alluring, she plans to use her time at Oxford to put right everything that went wrong in her loveless childhood. Her friendship with Alfred introduces her to politics and the subversive attractions of secret societies; it will lead to her career as a secret agent, but at what cost to old loyalties and her true feelings?

Claudia, radiant, intense, aristocratic, is equally drawn to the secret society and one member in particular; his dazzling influence will see her travel to Berlin and come under the spell of fascism as war looms.

And Lally, glamorous daughter of an Irish-American senator, is sceptical of the society and the arguments from both sides.

So much better when listened to a second time

I have loved all of Elizabeth Edmondson's books, but I have struggled with this one. The Characters did not pull me in and I just felt that this was the book that she might have wanted to write for herself, that she had an important story she wanted to tell. I am disappointed that I could not love it. HOWEVER, l would urge anyone to read the Mountjoy series and the Selchester series and the stand alone novels, which have fab characters, storylines..and always that 1 person you just love to hate.

So......I listened to this book again and appreciated it so much more. In fact I have turned to it 3 or 4 times now and it gets better. Obviously didn't have my A grade listening ears on the first time.

Brilliant, Voyage of Innocence

Loved the narration. A gripping story of the 1930”s.
I really felt the characters came to life.

Not her best

Excellent reading. Story often hardgoing. Oxford years bit tedious. Horrendously true spystory. Liked the ending.

Slow burner

This was the second story I have listened to by Elizabeth Edmonson. unfortunately, I found it pretty boring for about 3/4 of the novel, and yet I had to finish it because I wanted to find out what happened in the end. I'm not sure whether I'll bother with any more books by this author.

What a journey

Firstly the narrator was superb. Exactly right for this book. The journey it took me on was so detailed I felt I was living their lives and realised how easy it is to have your views swayed by a bit of naivety

Interesting listen

Not as catchy as the frozen lake but some nice over lapping done subtly.

Great insight into upper classes and the start of female further education. Really in-depth on political feelings pre ww2. I found it interesting but not fast paced.

So beautifully read

Excellent even though parts of the book were a little unbelievable. The menace and evils of extremism and the bonds of friendship are the constant themes . The obituaries were interesting but I wanted to know more !
