Summary

Silence can be deafening.

Jean McClellan spends her time in almost complete silence, limited to just 100 words a day. Any more, and a thousand volts of electricity will course through her veins.

Now the new government is in power, everything has changed. But only if you’re a woman.

Almost overnight, bank accounts are frozen, passports are taken away and 70 million women lose their jobs. Even more terrifyingly, young girls are no longer taught to read or write.

For herself, for her daughter and for every woman silenced, Jean will reclaim her voice. This is only the beginning....

Perfect for fans of The Handmaid’s Tale. Don’t miss the thrilling debut that everyone is talking about!

Great concept, poor execution.

There could have been so much more to this, such a shame the good bit got rushed. She spent 50 odd chapters setting the scene then half that actually dealing with it. Got a bit boring and repetitive!

A scary look into our possible future!!

Meanwhile, over in a Dystopian America....Women have been silenced!

They are no longer allowed to read, write, use phones, hold a job, and most scary of all, they are only allowed to speak a maximum 100 words a day!

To make sure that this is completely set in place, all women have been fitted with a beautiful bracelet, a little bit like a digital watch, it has a counter on it, but instead of telling the time, it slowly counts down from 100 every time you utter a word. When it gets down to zero you will receive an electric shock.
But don't feel it's just us poor old women that get the sh*tty end of the stick, no, the bracelet and the rules will also apply to young female children including babies!

A once brilliant minded Dr. Jean McClellan, a leading doctor in her field of Cognitive linguistics is now just a mother of 4, she is in the house just to cook, clean and wash like the dutiful housewife that she is!

She is however given a slight reprieve when her expertise is needed...to help a man!

With Flashbacks that show how women have been beaten down to nothing, while men are still allowed to do whatever they want, this Dystopian book will give you Handmaids Tale vibes, if you like that one, then you will probably love this book too

Don’t compare it to Atwell and you will enjoy it.

There are a lot of reviews running down this book by comparing it to The Handmaids Tale. Sure...there are some genre similarities...but sufficient differences for it to sit on its own. I enjoyed it and thought the narration was good.

Has the narrator ever heard a male voice?!

The book itself is alright. The comparision to Handmaid's tale does make it seem like the story has already been told, so that's a shame, because it is actually quite a unique perspective on a distopian future.

However, the narrator has the most annoying male voices and it genuinely seems she's never heard a man speak. Ever. I wish she'd just read the book without them because it spoils it.

An interesting concept poorly executed. Just not believable

I know it’s trying to build on the handmaid’s tale, but it makes too big a leap.
The main character is also difficult to relate to, I don’t mind flawed characters but this character had flawed priorities and an unlikable train of thought.
Also the end of this story was super rushed.

Good story, harrowing to listen to.

I know I don't always talk a lot but to be never able to say anything? Or even limited? Soul destroying. This has been such a harrowing book to listen to.

For lovers of The Handmaids Tale

A well written book bringing to life a woman’s experience in a persecuted society. Loved it all.
