Summary

Clare remembers the cold. She remembers abandoned cars and children’s toys littered across the road. She remembers dark shapes in the snow and a terror she can’t explain. And then...nothing.

When she wakes, aching and afraid in a stranger’s Gothic home, he tells her she was in an accident. He claims he saved her. Clare wants to leave, but a vicious snowstorm has blanketed the world in white, trapping them together, and there’s nothing she can do but wait.

At least the stranger seems kind...but Clare doesn’t know if she can trust him. He promised they were alone here, but she sees and hears things that convince her something else is creeping about the surrounding woods, watching. Waiting. Between the claustrophobic storm and the inescapable sense of being hunted, Clare is on edge...and increasingly certain of one thing:

Her car crash wasn't an accident. Something is waiting for her to step outside the fragile safety of the house...something monstrous, something unfeeling.

Something desperately hungry.

not the greatest!

The narrators voice was quite annoying. The story was a bit boring . The ending was rubbish.

stick with it

I enjoyed this book but I felt it took too long to get really going. Not one of my favourite books by Darcy but glad i stuck with it and got to the end.

narrator whispers

I usually listen at bedtime to fall asleep. Narrator actually whispers and then nearly shouts in same breath. I turn it up to try to hear her whispers, the boom! She starts talking normally nearly popping my eardrums. just cannot hear the poor narrator.

Super good!

A different take on the apocalyptic theme and it is fabulous! The narration was excellent and all the twists and turns that come together is shocking yet smooth. I got a little concerned about a possible romance (which I abhor), but the author saved me from that too. And the kicker... it's CREEPY! Almost had to put my phone in the freezer! (90s kids will understand that reference). I can't wait to listen to book #2!

Predictable dialogue

After awhile I just started groaning in response to the dialogue. Half the book is him telling her to stay safe and her arguing, agreeing, and then not. It seriously got old. The other half was them arguing about not being hurt when they’re actually hurt. And in the background there are zombies. That’s the book. The narration was really good.

Interesting story line

The novel is full of many different genres which kept my interest. It did get a little strange. The narrator is fantastic she did a great job with the book. As I was listening I thought about how the novel would end or the various plots. Kept my mind going so I have to say good book.

I'm starting the next book now

I didn't realize until the very end that this was a series. I'm going to get the next part now because I have to know what happens! It took a bit for me to get completely invested in this book but I'm glad I stuck it out. I thought I knew where it was going early on, but I was way off.

oh my goodness!

I listen to audible all the time when I'm in my car or have down time. I downloaded this book but kept putting if off, thinking it would be so-so. Boy, was I wrong! in some places it dragged a little, and some scenes were predictable.....but over all....it kept my attention! A few times, the story was actually suspenseful and freakin scarey!! When it ended, I was so disappointed 🥺! I cant wait until the follow up.

Not Interesting

I actually paid money for this as I had no credits and was going on a road trip. Less than halfway through and I can't take it. Clare needs help, Dorran comes to the rescue, he leaves the room, she does something stupid, here he comes again. This goes ON AND ON. I've read that the second half of the book picks up but at this point I am actually irritated and can't waste any more time on this. I want my money and time back.

Rescue, rinse, repeat

The plot was intriguing at first. I liked the suspense of being in the dark about what was happening. That is, until I realized exactly what was happening: helpless main character needs saving by strong man...over and over and over. How many times did he pick her up and literally carry her somewhere! Maybe if the plot had more going on the repeated rescuing would've been less noticeable, but it got pretty stagnant and I lost interest. Could've been so much better.
