Summary

Vincent Van Gogh: A Tortured Artist. An influential figure in the history of Western art.

Unlike most artists, Van Gogh developed very slowly, beginning with work as an art dealer that exposed him to many great works. He undertook this work for several years, after which he spent time as a missionary for the Dutch Reformed Church. Thereafter, he drifted for several years before returning home to his parents’ house, where he took up painting, largely self-taught with books on anatomy and painting. His great works all date from the later years of his life.

Inside you’ll hear about:

  • Early Life
  • The First Four Years of Creativity
  • Stylistic Developments and Influences
  • Paris
  • Arles
  • Van Gogh and Gauguin
  • Hospitalization
  • Life in an Asylum
  • Van Gogh’s Death

And much more!

Totally neglected in his life, he suffered from psychosis for much of his life and was treated for depression unsuccessfully. He died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound on July 29, 1890. Only after his death, thanks to the efforts of his brother, Theo, he achieved recognition as a great artist.

Utterly Magical

A wonderful collation of the private letters of Vincent (and many others). Skillfully combined with a sprinkling of artistic license to tell the incredible and tragic life of the two devoted brothers.

A Flawing personality.

That such an idealist could be so pragmatic simply makes him more inspiring to me. The Declaration of Independence remains the most inspiring political ideal ever penned.

This is a very well-written story of Vincent van

This is a very well-written story of Vincent van Gogh's tortured life, which took the authors a good 10 years to research and to compile the information gathered. It was written in chronological order for the most part making the continuity wonderful to read!

I have a kindle which I love but unfortunately the pictures were not in color so I ordered a hard back copy for myself and my son and am thinking about ordering more as gifts.

While the book portrays van Gogh as a tortured soul, it also led me to believe that he was a very intelligent man who was ahead of his time.

I recommend this book to everyone...it's well-written and is an all around great--although sad--story of one of our greatest artist!

I feel like I know VVG very well after reading this book. The authors spent 10 years writing this, and a masterpiece it is. I do believe it will become the definitive work on Van Gogh. Comes w/ a companion website with photos of Vincent’s paintings referenced in the book, as well as access to hundreds of pages of notes.

True, it is well researched and contains more information than I ever thought I'd need to know about Vincent. Vincent was always my favorite artist since the 70s. However, after reading this book ( I'm just 400 pages in and will finish it eventually) I don't think I will look at his art in the same way. I will be thinking of what a terrible and selfish person he was. As far as books about artists -- I thought the book the same authors wrote about Jackson Pollock was so much more interesting and well written and I came out of reading Pollock more of a fan of his art than I was when I started reading about him. Go figure.

If you want the definitive biography on Van Gogh this is it. It's comprehensive, extensive, not at all dull, has quite a few photographs and letters. My first reading was borrowed from the library and I liked it enough to buy not only a hardcopy but a digital copy for my iPad. If you've had the opportunity to see his work and are a fan you will enjoy this.

Amazing book, I had no idea about Vincent and his life. Very interesting. The writer has gone into detail revealing Van Gogh's life and his eccentricities. I am, however, still reading it. I started the book at a very busy time, so I have limited time to read right now. I do grab the book and read every chance I get. It has photos that are so interesting to, maybe U spend a little too much time perusing the photos too. Really into this book.

It's not easy to reconcile the powerful experienc

It's not easy to reconcile the powerful experience of viewing one of Vincent's great paintings with the knowledge that he was a man that always smelled bad, drank too much, had tertiary syphilis from his visits with the whores, and quarreled with everybody he knew. To the author's credit, he resists the temptation to go down the path that the world was not ready for someone as beautiful as Vincent. We get an exhaustive narrative of his life but, unfortunately it gets dry at times and repetitive: Vincent fails, asks his brother Theo for more money, and Theo sends money.

This leads back to the question of reconciling Vincent the man with Vincent's paintings. Is it necessary for him to have been a beautiful man in order to produce such beautiful things. The author presents the case that the answer is no.

Fantastic

Awesome book, to look and compare almost all of the known works. Nice reproductions, just wish the book went all of the way and provided a full colour pic of every painting of a decent size, and without having a picture spread over the binding. Just have two painting per page, or one spread horizontally over one page. There is a smaller sized, lighter version of this book if you want a cheaper or easier to carry around version

Fantastic

I know the story of "Vincent" well but was surprised by the humor injected into such a solemn subject. It was a refreshing look at the life and trials of the tortured artist through the eyes of his loving brother.

good one

Just what I was looking for. A definitive collection of Van Gogh's work. Visually beautiful and well written. I got this as a Christmas gift for my brother. But, I ended up getting a second copy for myself because I liked it so much. I am a big fan of Taschen. I have their Da Vinci book also, which is just as good.
