Summary

Rebecca Neumanner's marriage is on the brink of collapse as her desire to be a mother becomes an obsession. Then she receives news from her estranged family in Rhodes.

Called back to the beautiful Greek island of her birth, she realises how little she knows of the grandmother she has eluded for over a decade. Bubba has never spoken of the Nazi occupation during her youth, but there have always been whispers. What desperate measures did she take that terrible day in 1944 when her family was ripped apart? Can the rumour she had blood on her own hands really be true? But Bubba intends to take her secrets to the grave.

However, as Rebecca arrives on Rhodes, bringing the promise of new life, this broken family must come together. The time has come to tell the truth about the darkest of days....

Disappointing

Just got sillier and sillier. So much sorrow and the end was so obvious. Not really a story about the Jews in Rhodes, that was just a convenience to hang a doomed love affair on.

This story from true life events was excellent..

An excellent novel, exciting and fast paced. The narrative about the concentration camps was harrowing but essential in understanding what H appenned to the Jews of Rhodes. At the end there were many surprising twists and turns and kept me interested until the final chapter.

Ww2 meets 21st Century love story

wonderful story, v sad in places but ful of hope and love and made more believable by the inclusion of true wartime bits and pieces, making it feel so real. I feel like I've been through it with Dora and Naomi. A must read.

Not my favourite

Have read lots of historical fiction around this theme but unfortunately this wasn’t one of my favourites. Had high hopes for this but it didn’t live up to my expectations.

Gripping Greek Tragedy

Wonderful story about the plight of the Jews on the island of Rhodes during the World War through the eyes of a child freedom fighter who had to grow up too soon.
