Summary

Would you be prepared to work for free? How would you like to bust your hump for a large corporation 60-plus hours a week without a wage or a single day off for the vague promise of some mysterious perks in the distant future?

You'd refuse point blank, wouldn't you? But what if the job in question was playing a state-of-the-art fantasy MMORPG game? And what if this was the only thing you're really good at? Especially considering that your in-game partner is someone really special to you - and this person already lives a virtual life?

Knowing all this, would you consider the mysterious future bonus worth your while?

Not a good LitRPG. Author should play more games.

A bland attempt at a story by an author who seems to have only ever heard of the topic of videogames in passing - from some radio show or vague recollection he must have picked-up sometime on holiday a few years ago.

Packed with glaring plot holes and a frankly bland attempt at world crafting, the story starts to smell generic by the 3rd or 4th chapter (when the MC realizes he's been granted abilities that were mentioned to have been removed from the game, just as an example.)

From the author's glaring lack of understanding of basic game design and general mechanics to the atrocious dialogue from some of the characters (a 14 y/o girl who seems to have the speech pattern of a sage old man from time-to-time) the entire story seems aimed to remove any sense of immersion for the poor soul listening.

For those poor aficionados of the LitRPG genre: avoid this book. You will be physically cringing at some points.

Really engaging.

Loved the whole series. Couldn't stop listening. Good laughs throughout.
Pity they're not longer.

A surprisingly good and unusual tale

I truly enjoyed this story. I was expecting a more LitRPG style of novel but the twist of it being pure VR with a pseudo cyberpunk reality mixed in was a welcome surprise. The idea of a self learning ai being dragged into the mix as well was an excellent twist. Looking forward to seeing what the rest of the books hold.

really enjoyed this

I've returned a few litRPG titled that are disgustingly sexual. This was a nice easy listen. The plot isn't too grandeous, no world shaking epics. While the characters aren't complex, they feel relatable. Normal people with normal problems. Starting a lvl 1 pc in a massive MMORPG won't see you as the world saviour. If you want gore and sex, this isn't for you.

But if you go in with open expectations, you might just find yourself looking forward to the next small world dilemma the protagonists face virtually and irl.

really liked Eric's narration to bring it all to life.

Read/listened to all 4 back to back

A saw a review saying it wasn't much like an rpg.
The rpg bits were the most boring.
It's a book first and it kept me involved so it hit its mark.
Goal atainment (in game and out) seemed 'Hollywood Ending' though (too good to be true)

Fairly generic, couldn't finish it

Fairly generic total immersion rpg. The tanslation didn't help it.
Stopped listening when the protagonist met the mysterious love interest wandering around wearing nothing but a towel in the middle of an office. Said towel was promptly dropped. The attempted Anime esque imagery always puts me off.

Excellent!

Loved this series, was good to read about an alternative hero than just a regular human or beastkin. Highly recommended

A Hidden Gem!!

I was looking for something to fill the gaps between books and while waiting for my next credit, what i found in the free audible library was a hidden gem, It is not as fast paced some other books but it has a nice progressive story, not overpowered main character and a good side story in the real world. All 4 are in audibles free library so grab for some easy listening.

Gobbled this down like hot Grog!

I love RPGs and so I may be biased.

The story and gameplay are immersive and realistic. The game stats are pertinent enough yet don’t overshadow the listener.

Great plot. Characters are likeable. Reminiscent of Ready Player One but for Fantasy role playing gamers.

Narration is strong. Easy listening voice fitting the character.

Look forward to the next part of the saga!
