Summary

When one of his cats accidentally discovers a rare Victory Disc, the Vinyl Detective and his girlfriend, Nevada, are whisked into the world of big band swing music and a mystery that began during the Second World War.

Hired to track down the rest of the highly sought-after recordings of the Flare Path Orchestra, our hero will discover that the battles of the last world war aren’t over yet. And if all this sounds simple, it’s only because we haven’t mentioned drive-by shootings, murderous neo-Nazis, or that slight case of being buried alive....

A Defeat

The storyline is good but the attempt by the narrator to breathe life into the characters is poor and extremely naive. It would appear that 'Tinkler' has had a personality transplant since book one. From a lovable eccentric he has become a loud mouth ignorant moron with over prurient interests; his continual solecisms together with his juvenile gluttony make him a nauseating personality and a character who serves no useful purpose in the plot. He just isn't funny. As for many of the other characters, I'd like to know why the narrator makes them all sound like prototypes of a speak your weight machine dictating telegrams! This is a very disappointing book. The overall production and style has turned 'Victory Disc' into a defeat for the author.

A book too far

I quite enjoyed the first book in this series, quirky and quite original. The second was much the same and this one, the third, brings nothing fresh. Juvenile humour and very basic style wears thin and I will not bother with any further offerings. A one trick pony, which when see a second time is not such a good trick and a third time we know exactly how the trick is done

Fun if a bit of a plod

I enjoy these stories as they are a different take on the usual detective fiction. I like the characters and the fact they come from the real world (mostly). This is a good story, well read but not a great one. However, I enjoyed it and will listen to the next one, although I think they may become a bit samey.

Hmmmm, maybe lost me, this one.

This third instalment feels like it is suffering the “difficult second album” syndrome. And this review is lacking sufficient words.

Someone save the vinyl Detective!

I loved the first book in this series. I loved the crate digging and the little bits of info about searching for and collecting vinyl.
Each subsequent book has become less about that and increasingly dependent on a very average and in my opinion over extended story line. In all honesty I found this tale utterly boring which I am sad about as I had such high hopes after the first one. Will I read any more in the series? No, and I am not sure I will even manage to finish this one despite being 80% through it.

Unusual again!

Really enjoyed the first book. So very pleased the second book held me in the same way. Some good links in the story all woven together in the end. The detective and his unusual assistants on the trail again. 👍

Great story

I nearly didn’t get this book as someone had given it an awful review. So glad I didn’t listen to that review. This was a clever story and a great listen. I would definitely recommend it.
I marked the performance down only because Finlay can sometimes be a bit stilted the way he carefully sounds out every word and syllable. But on the whole he is easy to listen to and I loved the performance of the Australian guy.

Don't bother

I've enjoyed the first two books, despite change of narrator, but I gave up on this one. It bears little resemblance to the characteristic, entertaining writing style of its predecessors. It's simply meandering and dull.

Its another wonderful story

Andrew Cartmel's Vinyl Detective stories are some of the best detective fiction around. He goes from "cosy crime" to "really quite sinister" in a moment, and the plots are so wonderfully paced. All the clues are there, but he doesn't let you piece it together until he's ready.
