Summary

“I could spend days listening to you talk about chocolate.”

Sex and chocolate are the two pleasures Michał enjoys most in life.

His sex life has been nonexistent for some time, though. After a particularly bad hookup, he keeps mostly to himself. That leaves chocolate. Luckily, he works surrounded by the most delicious, extravagant produce in Gothenburg. Beside his job at the chocolaterie, his main source of excitement is his online friend, Magnus, whom he stubbornly refuses to meet in person.

A customer turns up at the chocolaterie one day - tall, shy, and charming. He could be just the right man. If Michał can step out of his overly safe shell, there might be not only chocolate, but sex, too. Maybe chocolate-flavored sex. And if he’s lucky, maybe even love.

Warning: This book contains explicit scenes, adult language, and obscene amounts of chocolate.

Highly recommended sweetness with a pinch of angst

I don't like chocolate. I’m also not a big fan of particularly sweet books. I usually find them bland, boring and lacking on emotional level. This is definitely not the case with Vanilla Clouds.

The story is gripping, the characters interesting and the chemistry between them undeniable.

The author has such a beautiful way with words, making the reading experience a delicious treat.

Also, the narrator is really enjoyable and is doing a very good job with the pronunciation of the Polish names :).

I can't believe this audiobook was less than 4 hours long. There are so many feelings and emotions packed into this story it felt like a full length novel.

I absolutely loved it!.

Adorable

This was a lovely story. Sweet and romantic. And while I knew where it was going for the most part I adored the tale told to get there.
Definitely a story to go back to again and again.
And while I'm on that subject, I might just have found a new favourite narrator.

Mmmmmm Chocolate!

A short but sweet tale (see what I did there!) with very likeable MC’s and a ton of chocolate. No drama and a HEA after two years of friendship, it was an easy listen with an engaging narrator. It’ll make you want to eat but, hey, that can only be good right?

A new author for me but I’ll definitely be looking up more books by Roe Horvat.

Great story, recommended to read and as an audible

First book I read from this author, and it hasn't been the last. A nice romance, about two guys who've been online friends for years, and one of them wants to take their friendship to the next level. I liked both MCs, and understood the reluctance of one of them to take the relationship further. I felt connected to both Magnus and Michal, and was interested to see how things worked out. A pretty straightforward story, with no real angst. Recommended both to read and to listen to. I've not come across Vance Bastian as a narrator before , I was impressed. Thought he did a pretty good job.

Chocolate is the best side dish to making love

Awwwwwwwwwwwwww .. how sweet is this little precious gem! 🥰 I loved it. 😍 The plot is quite simple, really. Two guys have been friends online for a couple years already but have never met in real life. And they are in different countries. So Magnus decided its time to rectify the situation and went and met Michal and they fell in love and had a happily ever after. 😌

I know this sounds very simple and sweet but it has a few twists, which I won’t reveal at all in this review. Well, may be a few. 😁 First of all, Michal works in a chocolaterie and Magnus is the sweetest giant. And did I say we get some factual knowledge about chocolate??? I mean who can beat a book talking and eating and sexualizing chocolate!!! 😏 It’s chocolate!!! 😁🍫 And the first time these two meet? It’s just sooooooooooooooooooooo cute. 😍 And Vance Bastian’s narration is spot on with the portrayal of both Magnus and Michal. I’m impressed. 👏 It’s just one heartwarming, fluffy and sweet story. 💜 I think I’ll pick this up whenever I feel sad. 😌 Now, I need to find some praline to satisfy my insatiable sweet tooth! 😁🍫😋

Vanilla Clouds

My first time with this author, Roe Horvat, and also with the narrator, Vance Bastian.
And I need to say that I am totally in love right now.
I love this book. And I loved this audio.

The story we get for Michal and Magnus is just so sweet and so cute; I loved every moment of it. Magnus’ actions during this book were a little predictable but that did not take anything away from the story at all. God, it was just sweet to hear it all play out. Michal is an adorable character, he was so clueless and almost innocent in some of his mannerisms. I am so glad they were able to work through the issues that Michal had, and that he forgave Magnus’ little deceptions. They really had a great connection and chemistry first as friends which turned into being so much more. I really looked forward to seeing how it all played out while I was listening.

Audio - Vance’s voice was absolutely perfect for both characters and their personalities. Completely solid narration from start to finish. I have nothing bad to say at all and I will be searching for more narrations by Vance. I really liked listening to his voice while he performed the story we got for these guys.

Highly recommendable!

5 Stars

I had heard great things about Roe Horvat, but hadn't had the chance to read one of his books until now and it was as amazing as I expected.

I found the story captivating and left me craving some chocolate, since Michal worked at a chocolaterie. I will admit there were moments in which I wanted to knock Michal out because damn if he wasn't difficult with the not wanting to meet Magnus after 2 years of texting and dating jerks in the meantime. I get that Michal was afraid, but he pushed Magnus into the charade he pulled. I guess I should be thankful the author didn't drag the angst for too long and it was lovely seeing Magnus and Michal as a couple for more than 5 minutes. They had fantastic chemistry and I just adored them together.

Vance Bastian did a fantastic job with the narration. Other than Michal and Magnus's voices being too similar in certain portions of the book—which really wasn't a problem, I'm pretty sure Mr. Bastian could read the phone book and I'd still find it enjoyable—I had the most wonderful time listening to this story. The narrator's tone is pleasant and he gave the story that certain quality that just made me fall for Magnus and Michal even more. I have to add that his pronunciation seemed spot on and effortless, which isn't easy to do considering the book is set in Sweden and there were so many foreign words. Highly recommendable!

Michal and Magnus come to life

I haven’t read the book, just listened to the audio. I think the beginning of the audio would of been better for me if I had read it first. It starts out with messages between the men which was confusing until I sorted out who was who. That is probably my issue, not the story. I did enjoy the narration by Vance Bastian. He imbued both men with a sense of fun lightness even though the story wasn’t always happy.

Michal works in a chocolate shop. Surrounded by the chocolate he loves, doesn’t make up for being alone. Lousy relationships have left him feeling he will never have someone to love. His closest friend and confidant is Magnus. They have never met but have established a very special friendship online. Their relationship had just the right amount of getting to know you fear and please can we hurry up with the sexy times.I don’t want to ruin the story so no spoilers. It was a fairly short story but I think the characters were well defined. I liked it.

Gorgeous Story, Vance Bastian is Perfect!

If you haven’t experienced a story by Roe Horvat Vanilla Clouds is an excellent place to start. Moving and heartfelt, this novel is a feast for the senses as well as the soul. Brought to life by the captivating voice of Vance Bastian, the audio version of Vanilla Clouds is everything I could have hoped for. Listening to this one is a pleasure!

From the lush descriptions of the chocolates, to the colorful atmosphere of this enchanting Swedish city, I’m already planning my next vacation. The dialogue is charmingly European and a refreshing change from the usual romance novels I read. The way these folks communicate is just fundamentally different and so appealing. Trust me, this one is over way too soon.

Roe Horvat weaves the familiar friends-to-lovers scenario into a gorgeous hurt/comfort tale that warms my heart. Michał’s journey is uplifting and hopeful, and it’s wonderful to see him find peace. It’s a slow-burn, but OH is it worth the wait!

Vance Bastian’s rich, warm vocals infuse so much expression into the narration. While the text exchanges could be cold and unemotional, he animates them and helps establish the unique qualities of each character.

As Michał tells his tale, the complexities of his personality come through beautifully in audio. Timid and coy, he also has an engaging sense of humor, and Mr. Bastian captures every nuance during a pivotal moment when an enticing, bearded customer enters his store and Michał’s interest is piqued. His cheeky uncertainty comes right through and it’s an adorable scene.

Soothing and sumptuous, Vanilla Clouds is everything I want a romance novel to be. It’s a great read, and an incredible audio - either way please pick it up, it’s amazing!

Cute

I downgraded the performance part of the review, but I don't think the narrator was necessarily bad, I just didn't think the story translated well to an audiobook.

The beginning of a story usually sets the tone for the book, this one starts out with a series of private messages/emails. When you're reading the story, you can physically see the screen names written down on paper (screen). When listening to an audio you have to rely on the narrator. For the first part of this book, I kind of had no idea what was going on, or who was who, it was just a name said and some dialogue after. I could barely understand what he was saying.

It sounded very droll and robotic. Again, not fully the narrators fault, it's how the story read. Though maybe some flair could have been added somehow to keep it not so monotonous.

From then on, I had a feeling this may not be a good story. I'm glad I kept listening though because thankfully the rest of the story wasn't heavy on messaging.

I am also wondering where the accents were, this story was based in Sweden, but it was all very American English sounding except for a few names of streets and places, etc... I was slightly disappointed in that.

That all being said, this really did turn out to be a lovely story. It was sweet and Magnus was a pleasant surprise. I may have been saying in my head "that's Magnus ya fool! Open your eyes!" I may have also stopped to make some hot chocolate (yes, I melted real chocolate ;) )

Lighthearted listen

Vanilla Clouds is a low-angst, lighthearted friends to lovers romance - kind of. Michal and Magnus are online friends until one wants more and the other is afraid of it. The story flows well for the most part with the exception of the online messaging. There is quite a lot of it at the beginning and while I was able to follow it, the rapid fire back and forth of this pair's online relationship doesn't come across as well as I would've liked in the audio format. I don't think that was any fault on the narrator. He did a good job with the characters and story. I feel like it was more due to the fact that it is in the beginning of the story, so I was just getting to know the characters, which made it hard to get into those parts of the book. Once Michal meets a new customer at the chocolaterie, things pick up, and it's easy to see where things are headed. The characters are likable and I did enjoy the romance, but I didn't find anything to set this romance apart from any other like it. What little angst there is comes just as I expected and is resolved very quickly, especially when considering Michal's relatively recent past. Overall, the story is worth the listen and is a good way to while away a couple of hours road trip.

New to me author and vocal performer

4.5 Stars so rounding up to 5

This is my first book by this author and WOW what a surprise for me…I rarely love novellas, but this is just damn awesome (so I may be a bit gushy). There is so much emotion packed in this book. The writing is SO good. The pacing is perfect and because the MC’s have a history that is well explained though not fully witnessed by the reader, their love is grown organically and not rushed. The story is completely unique and new to me…the location, how the MC’s met – first virtually then in person, and the overall premise of the story. This book has the perfect balance of sweet romance and melt the pages, super-hot, sexual chemistry between Michal and Magnus.

While Michal is a good solid character, Magnus made me an absolute puddle of goo. I could tell, almost from the beginning, how much he FELT for Michal. I can honestly say it seems as if he lives for Michal…

I don’t want to give too much away as it’s short and this is definitely a story that should be experienced without any spoilers or additional information, so I’ll stop here.

Do yourself a favor and listen to the book even if you’ve already read it or want to read it. The vocal performance was amazing. His pronunciation of the foreign (to me) locations and the names was superb (and very appealing 😊). His voices for both Michal and Magnus were spot on for their personalities. He brought the emotions of the story to life!

A wonderful seductive romance

This book made me so hungry! All the descriptions of delicious chocolates fit the story so well, and when Michal and Magnus finally find their way to each other I think I died from the heat these two generated.
what I like about Roe Horvat's books is that they take place in Europe, when most M/M's are in the US/UK/AU and the cultures are more familiar to an average reader. I don'd live in Europe or the US and getting to know another country through a book is a wonderful treat. Horvat had a unique writing style that really sucks you in and makes you feel like you are in Sweden (or any other country, depending on the book).
I was also really liking the friends to lovers theme in this story, you could really sense the connection between them even when they were only messaging and I loved Magnus's bravery (despite it being a bit stalkerish) in going after the man he loves no matter how hard. The characters were well rounded and interesting, I enjoyed the banter between them a lot.

The narration was very good, I already listened to another Horvat audiobook with the same narrator, he bring in emotions gently, has a good range of voices and tackles accents and foreign languages remarkably.
