Summary

We live in a time of unprecedented upheaval, when technology and so-called progress have made us richer but more uncertain than ever before. We have questions about the future, society, work, happiness, family and money, and yet no political party of the right or left is providing us with answers. So, too, does the time seem to be coming to an end when we looked to economists to help us define the qualities necessary to create a successful society.

We need a new movement. One defined by a young historian who can tell us the truth about how we got here. They'd be a political outsider, the voice of their generation, one who doesn't harness rage or agitate grievances but who provides us with the answers for which we've been looking. That person is Rutger Bregman, and his vision is Utopia for Realists.

Inspiring, Eye Opening Book

I loved this book, well argued. I think the title would have been more realistic as utopia for optimists however!

An entertaining examination of our view of the world

An entertaining examination of our view of the world. This book doesn’t just examine the idealistic hypotheses but also wakes you up in a way art and yoga can. Invites you to think that the world has developed one way but its not all set in stone. How about considering society made of different structures, expectancies & norms.

Regardless of your politics, worthy of consideration.

This a timely and provocative set of ideas that are well researched, presented and argued. Honest and aspirational in its attempt to highlight the possible dystopian futures we face in a world with less work, more precarious work practices and the consolidation of wealth among a few dozen people. Equally fearless in suggesting evidence-based utopian solutions rooted in pragmatism and solidarity.

Utopian Ideas, Historical Data

This book has changed my understanding of many ideas and concepts. Rutger Bregman's backs up his ideas with hard evidence using historical examples. Well worth a read.
