Story
The Art of Rest draws on groundbreaking research Claudia Hammond collaborated on - 'The Rest Test' - the largest global survey into rest ever undertaken, which was completed by 18,000 people across 135 different countries. Much of value has been written about sleep, but rest is different; it is how we unwind, calm our minds and recharge our bodies. And, as the survey revealed, how much rest you get is directly linked to your sense of well-being.

Self-help books like The Secret promise that we can tap in to the 'law of attraction' to control our destiny, simply by changing our thoughts. If we strip away the mystique, at the heart of this idea is a fundamental truth that is backed up by the latest breakthroughs in neuroscience: most of the things we want from life - health, happiness, wealth, love - are governed by our ability to think, feel and act; in other words, by our brain.

Summary
Brought to you by Penguin.
Break free from anxiety and be free to live a full, happy life with internationally renowned psychiatrist and neuroscientist Dr Judson Brewer - based on over 20 years of research and his simple habit-breaking programme.
We are living through one of the most anxious periods any of us can remember. Whether facing issues as public as a pandemic and political upheaval or as personal as having kids at home fighting the urge to reach for the wine bottle every night, we are feeling overwhelmed and out of control. But in this timely book, Judson Brewer explains how to uproot anxiety at its source using brain-based techniques and small hacks accessible to anyone.
We think of anxiety as everything from mild unease to full-blown panic. But it's also what drives the addictive behaviours and bad habits we use to cope (e.g. stress eating, procrastination, doom scrolling and social media). Plus, anxiety lives in a part of the brain that resists rational thought. So we get stuck in anxiety habit loops that we can't think our way out of or use willpower to overcome. Dr Brewer teaches us map our brains to discover our triggers, defuse them with the simple but powerful practice of curiosity and to train our brains using mindfulness and other practices that his lab has proven can work.
Distilling more than 20 years of research and hands-on work with thousands of patients, including Olympic athletes and coaches, and leaders in government and business, Dr Brewer has created a clear, solution-oriented programme that anyone can use to feel better - no matter how anxious they feel.

Game changer for Generalised Anxiety Disorder
I’ve become pretty much obsessed with trying to understand and alleviate my anxiety since I noticed how much time it takes up. Even if I resolved issues I was worrying about something else would take its place. I was beginning to accept that this is just life and I’m just a worrier. After listening to this book I’m convinced there is a solution to my anxiety.
When people write in reviews that the book is life changing, I’ll read it eagerly but it rarely has the same impact on me. This book however may well be that book for me.
It just hit home on so many ways. Many examples made me say out loud “I do that” or OMG that’s me! The gears make perfect sense, the exercises are short, practical, accessible and completely eye opening.
Habit loops! So simple to understand when you can see them. I live my life in these loops good and bad. There have been too many bad ones created or exacerbated by this last challenging year and this book is already helping me see more clearly. What an amazing find after listening to a new podcast. Thank you!

Not too bad, but underdelivers
The book is not too bad, however as many other modern books it overpromisses and underdelivers. The information density is very low, they give lots of unnecessary anecdotes and it is sometimes not clear at all what the author's point is.
