Summary

For his whole life, Thordric has been told that his magic is dangerous, and that he must never use it.

All over Dinia, half-wizards are treated the same, their magic labelled as dangerous and uncontrollable. But when High Wizard Kalljard dies under mysterious circumstances, it falls to young Thordric to solve the case.

The only trouble? The deed was done by magic, and though Thordric is a half-wizard, he has never fully used his powers. To prove himself right and find the person responsible, Thordric has to learn how to control his own powers.

But can he learn fast enough, and find the perpetrator in time?

An excellent young adult book

I recieved a review copy of this book. The story is simple but fun, and not without twists. The young main character struggles to find a place in the world and prove himself which he does successfully.

Simple but Engaging

I received this audiobook in exchange for an honest review.

Written by Kathryn Wells and narrated by Morgan Keller, Unofficial Detective: The Mage Apprentice follows the adventures of half-wizard Thordric. Fifteen-year-old Thordic is forced to take a job with the police inspector, where he does chores and interacts with his mortician mother. He quickly meets Lizzy, the inspector's sister, who teaches him to hone his magical abilities. He eventually uses his skills to aid the inspector in his investigations.

Wells writes interesting characters with dynamic moods and emotions. I particularly appreciate her female characters, who have depth and substance. The world isn't very expansive, but it serves as an adequate backdrop. Athough the story is somewhat simplistic, it remains fairly unpredictable throughout. Overall, the story is engaging, and it makes for a great light read.

Morgan Keller does a good job with his narration. He speaks clearly, and his voice remains appealing throughout the 4 hour and 40 minute run time. The only issue I noticed was that he doesn't flow naturally through every sentence. Rather, it sounds more like the sentences are broken into sections. Despite this, Keller's narration never detracted from the narrative.

I really enjoyed this book. Wells writes a fine story that moves at a good pace. Her characters are entertaining, and she includes twists and turns to keep things interesting. Keeler does a fine job narrating. I'm excited to start on Half-Wizard Thordric book 2,

Quick, Clean Fantasy

I received a review copy of this book.

This book is fun, clean, and interesting. The characters are likable. It's neither slow nor long (the Audible edition lasts 4 hours and 40 minutes). The story holds together.

Unlike many fantasy stories, it is neither gory nor sexually suggestive/explicit. I would have no trouble letting my second grader read this.

There are one or two details that might be considered plot holes or flaws, but they in no way ruin the story and are no worse than what you might find in any similar book.

This one was one of the best stories that I have enjoyed in a while! Lovable characters that you can empathize with and a story that grabs you and doesn't let go. I have to have more from this author.

You wont regret picking this one up - well worth a credit.

Soooo GOOD!!!

I totally Loved this book!! It was well written, orignal, and interesting from page one to the very end!! The narration was excellent too. I finished this book in one sitting, I hated to put it down for any reason. My poor husband, I'm pretty sure I told him to leave me alone till I was finished...Poor guy, it happens at least 1-3x a week! lol. But anyway, it was an excellent book. I really wish I could find where I got this book from. I would LOVE to listen and review the next book in the series. <3 <3 <3

This book was given to me at my request. I am providing a voluntary and honest review. <3 <3 <3

Unofficial Detective: The Mage Apprentice

I was given this book for free in exchange for an honest review.

It was too short, I want more! This was a fun mystery with magic combo that I haven't really thought about or read before. Definitely enjoyable and worth the time and money if you're looking for a fun book.

Enjoyable magical mystery

The story is reminiscent of Harry Potter meets Encyclopedia Brown. It was an enjoyable listen with excellent narration. Magic in the story is used more as a tool while the plot focuses more on solving the mystery of a political murder. It would be an worthwhile addition to any middle school children's (and older) reading list and would provide an opportunity for discussion on the injustices that can result from allowing biases due to differences to exist as half-wizards are treated as sub-class citizens despite possessing formidable abilities.

Delightful Tale

I received this book for free. I am voluntarily posting this review and all opinions expressed herein are my own.

Thordic is a young man who has magical powers but has been told his whole life that his magic was dangerous as he was not a pure wizard. He gets a job, through the help of his medical examiner mother, as an errand boy for the police. When a great wizard dies, Thordic knows it was by magic and murder but the police believe it was suicide.

This is an interesting story for all ages - there's a fantasy mystery at its core but the story also deals with prejudice, insecurities and the willingness to assert yourself to do what is right. This is a really enjoyable tale.

The narrator did a nice job. Distinctive voices were used for the various characters and read at a good pace. There were no problems with the audio or any extraneous noises.

Pleasantly Surprised

This story was rather fun. The world and magic system were sufficiently interspersed with science and real world themes. It's an enjoyable coming of age book that I'd recommend to any advanced elementary school, jr high school, or high school aged reader.
The audio performance was executed well and allowed for easy visualization without detracting from the story or its characters. In fact, the voice of each character was distinct and crisp permitting differentiation, and hence, little to no confusion during long stretches of dialogue.

Great story and telling

This book is a very interesting and not a boring book, Its easy to understand. The audible version's narrator has very good expressions and you can tell the voices apart easily. Not once in the audible version did I have to stop and wonder, who is this character? I would definitely recommend this book to others, it's really fun. It would be a good read if you're looking for something fun to read.
