Summary

Dr. Kate Turner is happy with her new life in Oak Falls in upstate New York. Working as a relief veterinarian at a small house-call practice, she truly enjoys helping her patients.

All that changes when client Claire Birnham is found dead, an apparent suicide. A talented artist, Claire had everything to live for: a new job,;a Manhattan apartment; her cairn terrier, Toto. As feisty as the Wizard of Oz's Toto, he and Claire were devoted to each other. Kate can't imagine Claire simply abandoning her pet. Was her death murder?

Questions end when police arrest young kennel helper Eugene. The fragile friendship between Kate and police officer Luke Gianetti frays as she ignores his advice and keeps asking questions. House calls provide gossip and clues, some helpful, some not so much, as she treats her animal patients. Did Claire's recent insurance windfall prove too tempting for her hardworking and hard-drinking mother? What does trouble in the art gallery where Claire worked signal? How huge a grudge did heavy metal rocker A. J. hold against high school sweetheart Claire after she dumped him? Was Claire a threat to A. J.'s rich new girl?

Dr. Kate mixes real medicine with murder as she risks her life over Claire's death, aided by insights from a former fire investigator, aka her gramps. Unleashed is just as irresistible as Dr. Kate's first adventure, Muzzled.

Great Series

This is a delightful cozy mystery with great characters in a realistic setting. It's turning into one of my favorite cozy mysteries.

For a cozy mystery, it's a good read

I liked this book, and also the previous one, by Eileen Brady. Kate Turner is a veterinarian who manages to get involved in solving the murders of a couple of pet owners she has been working with (in the two books). In this book, I think the author made a bit of a stretch in justifying how and why she pushed so hard to become involved, but that aside, the story was good. The characters are interesting and relatable, the plot moves well, there were plenty of suspects, and the narration is pretty good as well. It's too bad that, as of now, these appear to be the only two books in the series. I hope Ms Brady will write another one--or more. :-) Recommend to anyone who enjoys cozy mysteries.

confused

The first book in this series ended in a completely different way than this book started. The romance between the leading person and Luke should have carried. I was looking forward to picking the story back up and was very disappointed when I started listening. That is usually the point of a series but I won't even complete this book. It was almost like starting a new series but it referred back to things from the first book, very confusing what the author was trying to do.

Nosy Vet

Any additional comments?

This is a vast disappointment from the first book in the series. At least in the first book, Kate had a reason to be looking into the murder. This time, I spent the entire time trying to understand why Kate was investigating and frankly, she got more annoying with each passing chapter. She convinced from the first that a woman she hardly knows is murdered and gets annoyed when Claire's family, friends and police don't immediately give her all the information she needs. Then random characters just come out with important clues and decide Kate is the person they are going tell. The whole plot is illogical.

Unleashed

I like Caroline Shaffer as the narrator for this series. I think she is really adding to it!

This is book 2 in the Kate Turner series and I am already listening to book 3. Kate is a very likable character and, though she is a vet, the book s does not get mired down in the animals/vet work.

fun story

like that the story has some science, that the main characters are strong women, that there are animals and caring people. and a wide range of people. only downside is that sometimes it appears to be a number of short stories tied together with a mystery, which can be distracting with characters reintroduced multiple times as if never met before. early in the series so hopefully this improves.
