  • Summary

  • Progress is a constant state of learning and unlearning.

Writer, curator and producer Liv Little questions our modern understanding of big subjects – consent, race, transness, disability and body image – by learning more about their past.

Unlearn addresses a series of uniquely modern dilemmas: how did we get to the point where couples verify consent to have sex with each other via an app? How has our language about trans issues become so problematic and challenging? Is it possible for us to unpick the toxic understanding we have of our own body image?

Liv talks to contributors from across generational lines about what they've learnt and unlearnt during their lifetime in relation to these subjects. Has the progress that was made by each generation been positive? Or has it set us up for a more complicated present and future? And if progress is a constant state of unlearning the knowledge that's passed on from generation to generation, what comes next?

Thought-provoking & interesting

I've loved every episode of this series. I felt like I dipped into many personal areas that invited me again to widen my perspective in a healthy way. Loved it and would love to hear more from Liv Little. Thank you.

Great concept - want to hear more

The inter-generational debate table is usually kept sacred for Christmas dinner, but this podcast cracks open the format, covering a topic from the lived experiences of people throughout time, unapologetically and head on. My only critique is that I want more! Liv handles conversation like a pro, particularly when it takes a wayward turn in the body image episode. But these are important conversations to have, and they are illuminating rather than infuriating. People of all ages could do with listening, taking note, and then engaging in the conversation with their community. There is a lot to unlearn.

Disappointingly dull

I tried the first 3 episodes but couldn’t get more than 10 minutes into any of them without my attention wandering. I think the same content could have been presented in a more engaging way. Such as shame as the topics covered are important ones.

Could have been much better

For an edited series, this is very poor. It sounds like it was completed without any contemplation, as if the narrator was reacting to interviews in real time, with no consideration for a cohesive argument, logical train of thought, or proper choice of vocabulary. It could have been a meaningful, eloquent discussion of really important issues, but it turned out to be a mish-mash of interesting first-hand accounts, unstructured responses to unscripted interviews, and a generally unsatisfactory scraping of the surface.

Lacked structure and conclusions

Disappointing, this was patchy . Some insightful contributions from guests and some enlightening statistics but not life-changing. Shame because I was interested in the topics and wanted something more concrete.

Glad this type of thing is being done

Honest, interesting, vulnerable, provocative - an excellent introduction to some uncomfortable topics that need to be addressed & an invitation to look more deeply into these topics yourself.
