Straight down the line

Straight forward police procedural (circa 80's judging by the slang). Good Vs. bad, no twists or turns.

Wow

The storyline is gritty and full of a different take on a cop story.
Finding out who is guilty of what and carrying it through. Good police work against dirty.
Jake Urry as always narrated and was excellent. Atmosphere flowed and kept me hooked.

Good introduction to the series

Jake Urry has one of those voices that hold your attention to the point where I think he could read out his shopping list and I would find it interesting. The book did have more to offer than a list of provisions. I haven't read anything by either author before but there was a definite feel of authenticity to the police characters and their language and it's no surprise that both authors are former police officers. This was fairly short with the narration lasting under 4 hours. DI Terry McGuire was a great character and I will probably read more of the series. My usual problem here with swearing as while it felt totally in character I just don't like to hear it narrated.

This audio version of Unethical Conduct brings a wonderful partnership of book and narrator. Jake Urry's reading captures the character, world weary determination and ethical outlook of DI Terry McGuire, the main protagonist, from who's point of view most of the story is told. Mr.Urry's other individual voicings throughout are also superb, with gentle Welsh or regional accents present and each distinctively different. And he is pace perfect, slow and careful but relentless, just like Terry as he faces having to secretly investigate the truth of allegations brought against another recently retired copper by two old lags, whilst still dealing with the discovery of an unidentified body and a flasher seen running, naked, between the holiday caravans in his area.

This book has such a feeling of authenticity that it came as no surprise to learn, at the end, that it is written by two retired police officers, one of whom, at least, would have known the area well whilst the other spent time in Special Branch. The story is full of character and carefully investigation, of greed driven arrogance on the part of some of the players and of frustration found in the difficulties placed in the bringing to justice of villains.

This is a superb read for all police procedural fans who want to know what it really feels like. It has humour and excellent characterisations, too, further given life by the narration. A definite recommendation.

Good book with excellent narration.

I don't suppose I'd have read this book if I'd come across it in a book shop, the cover is not at all inspiring, however, I listened to this as an audiobook via Audible and that was a totally different experience. Jake Urry was the narrator and I loved his sultry drawl, which perfectly matched the characters.

The two authors have served many years in the police force, so when they write a police procedural about internal police corruption, it adds another dimension to a hidden vice, that we prefer to believe does not exist.

There are three aspects to DI Terry McGuire's inquiries - firstly a corruption case brought by some proven criminals who claimed that some of their offences had been planted on them by the police. Secondly, a dead body that had been dumped after spending five years in a freezer. And thirdly, a flasher who was stalking women in the local park.

As the investigation proceeds and evidence gradually reveals itself, I became more involved with Terry McGuire's character, though I didn't manage to keep all the villains in place in my brain. No matter, it was an excellent listen and I shall be searching out more from the narrator.

Good police and crime story

The story was excellent the characters were very real. Only one criticism I have and that is the somewhat gratuitous use of bad language. Whilst making it 'real life' it still was excessive, for me anyway!

Outstanding narration!

I read this book on its release and enjoyed it, but hearing it has brought an entirely deeper appreciation of the writing. This book is far better as an audio book than it is in print. I found Terry's strength of character easier to understand when it felt as if he were talking to me. The book didn't feel as rushed as it had when reading and you could feel the evil arrogance of the corrupt police officers in the narrator's voice. Jake Urry has turned an enjoyable book into a masterpiece. Fabulous!
