A major new collection from "arguably the most important intellectual alive" (The New York Times). Noam Chomsky is universally accepted as one of the preeminent public intellectuals of the modern era. Over the past thirty years, broadly diverse audiences have gathered to attend his sold-out lectures. Now, in Understanding Power, Peter Mitchell and John Schoeffel have assembled the best of Chomsky's recent talks on the past, present, and future of the politics of power.

In a series of enlightening and wide-ranging discussions, all published here for the first time, Chomsky radically reinterprets the events of the past three decades, covering topics from foreign policy during Vietnam to the decline of welfare under the Clinton administration. And as he elucidates the connection between America's imperialistic foreign policy and the decline of domestic social services, Chomsky also discerns the necessary steps to take toward social change. With an eye to political activism and the media's role in popular struggle, as well as U.S. foreign and domestic policy, Understanding Power offers a sweeping critique of the world around us and is definitive Chomsky. Characterized by Chomsky's accessible and informative style, this is the ideal book for those new to his work as well as for those who have been listening for years.

Very long and detailed journey of American and world history rooted in real examples a day references. The relevance of some predictions and commentary from 1990's to today's political landscape is truly reflection of well grounded understanding of power dynamics

insightful and relevant to history and present

This book has turned my understanding of the world upside down. Noam Chomsky stands as a witness for history. It really is indispensable!

Brilliant and insightful, though very depressing in its message. People should read it but only if they can cope with the message and its implications

The most depressing book I've ever read

This audiobook consists of Chomsky's responses to short questions from audiences and seminar groups across America in the 1990s. The editors have grouped together connected answers, so the discussion flows engagingly even if they came from different sessions. The informality makes this a very accessible introduction to the political Chomsky's areas of interest -- US foreign policy, propaganda, corporate capitalism, the Middle East, the environment... but also democracy, activism and resistance. Despite events from 2001 on, none of the material covered has lost its relevance.

In contrast to his linguistics (not addressed here) Chomsky's politics does not require any special theoretical understanding or technical terms, at least none that he or the editors don't explain as you go. The narrator signals these parentheses using a hushed voice, which does the trick. The book's footnotes containing references to sources are available online at understandingpower.com.

The performance is engagingy conversational in a way that fits the informal setting, while still communicating Chomsky's cool passion and hope. The questions are asked by either 'man' (deeper voice with a bit of bravado) or 'woman' (higher, softer, gentler). I wasn't entirely sure about these stereotypes (or whether the questioner's sex was relevant in the first place) but it didn't detract from my enjoyment.

The 1992 documentary, Manufacturing Consent, available online, is a great companion to this audiobook.

Well worth listening to this as most topics are very much relevant to today's world. Now 20 years old but the issues remain the same and you could argue have only been amplified with the passage of time.

Still relevant today
