Summary
If you don't know Simon Scarrow, you don't know Rome!
Under the Eagle is the gripping first novel in Simon Scarrow's best-selling Eagles of the Empire series. A must-read for fans of Bernard Cornwell and Conn Iggulden.
AD 42, Germany. Tough, brutal and unforgiving. That's how new recruit Cato is finding life in the Roman Second Legion. He may have contacts in high places, but he could really use a friend amongst his fellow soldiers right now. Cato has been promoted above his comrades at the order of the Emperor and is deeply resented by the other men. But he quickly earns the respect of his Centurion, Macro, a battle-hardened veteran as rough and ready as Cato is quick-witted and well-educated. They are poles apart, but soon realise they have a lot to learn from one another.
On a campaign to Britannia - a land of utter barbarity - an enduring friendship begins. But as they undertake a special mission to thwart a conspiracy against the Emperor they rapidly find themselves in a desperate fight to survive....

First rate!
The narrator is brilliant. This is a great book anyway and the narrator brings it to life. The characters are easy to follow and the author has done a great job in placing you there with them.
Highly recommend.

A good entertaining listen
As with a lot of audio books you wonder "How can I listen to this voice for that many hours?" but typically after the first chapter you ease into the dulcet tones of the narrator as I did with this book. Well narrated and easy to discern characters from the nuanced alterations of accents and pronunciation...although his vocal portrayal of women leaves something to be desired. This is an entertaining journey into the intrigue and life of a Roman soldier, I look forward to listening to more of this series.

Excellent
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes, fun with likeable characters, historical, at least in the sense of not destroying history, it fills in the gaps.

A great listen
Another great story and build up. The narration is difficult to get into at first but then does suit the story the longer you stay with it

Fantastic
Brilliantly written and engaging story line. A fantastic listen for anyone who loves historical novels and for those who find Roman & Iron Age history interesting. All round thoroughly enjoyed Under the Eagle, can't wait to get listening to the next one in the series

A great start to hopefully a great series.
I'd heard of the adventures of Cato and Macros I thought I'd give the first book a listen. I want at all disappointed. A great book with plenty of action, intrigue and humour.
I've already brought and downloaded the second in the series and look forward to listening.
The only annoyance was David Thorpe's narraration. He annoyingly pronounces Cato as Car-tow, when it should be pronounced Kay-tow.

Great book.
Great book, took me a long time to find time to listen to it. Narrator was on point even to the very detail of the uniforms and battles. Bravo.

A good read
Perhaps I should say listen? I thoroughly enjoyed the story. Its not for the faint hearted or young. It moves on art a cracking pace and is well developed. Part of a series its the first in a series that gets better as it goes on.
It is quite informative too. Mr Darrow is clearly well up on his subject. It does make a few assumptions which cannot be proven but its a story not a textbook.
Highly recommended
