About this listen

Left a bequest by a woman with rare psychic powers, Eada of Pevensey suddenly finds herself in possession of a box containing a mysterious document...and something even more extraordinary: the gift of second sight. Now she can actually "see" her chilling fate: a Norman invader with sea-dark eyes riding across the fields to claim her lands...and her love.

A reluctant soldier for William the Conquerer, Drogo de Toulon seizes the Pevensey lands as a right of conquest...and meets a woman who defies him at every turn - and arouses uncontrollable desire. Yet now, as war rages across a divided England, the two lovers must find the bond that joins body and soul...as they chart a course through battle and betrayal that could break their hearts - or seal their passion for all time.

Contains mature themes.

A most enjoyable story and well narrated. The plot and characters were interesting. Also no boring, drawn out sex scenes.

Lovely story.

I can only say that I'm really grateful that romance novels have evolved from the 80s & 90s ideas of romance!

It's incredible that all 80s & 90s that I've come acroos all seem to have very strong noncey themes, are outright rapey or even just very iffy consent issues!

Not a spoiler as it's explained in the first 5mn of the book... the heroine is a teenager, naturally... she's 18, a widow, has already observed her year of mourning... but, fear not she's a virgin, because of course she'd need to be! Heaven forbid if she were experienced 🙄

Most of the Norman invaders, including her captor calls her a child... the hero calls her a child AFTER they've had sex... nonce alert!!!!! Yet, the author saw absolutely nothing wrong with that?!?

Not only that, but she says no THREE times & it's treated as foreplay & brushed aside by the hero... say what now?!

It seems like it was gonna be a good story, but it's not only noncey, it's rapey to boot!

old fashioned ideas of love

The story of a Norman knight and Saxon seer, the author cleverly steered her way through the horror of war, conquer and captivity, focusing on the effects on the English population during the invasion by William the Bastard, seen through the eyes of a couple who began as captive and conqueror and ending with their love being rewarded and blessed. Really enjoyed this story and liked the character of both the main hero/ heroine. Not sure William was as easy going as portrayed but very interesting to read a novel based on more than just the battle of Hastings itself.
The narrator did a reasonable job.

Wonderful story of love in the midst of war
