About this listen

Danger and violence have always been part of Sue Dalston's East End upbringing. Unloved by her mother, abused by her father, and brutalised throughout her entire marriage, she smashed her husband's skull in a final act of desperation. All that keeps her sane knows that she's done it to protect her four children. At last, they are safe from harm. When she is celled up with murderess Matilda Enderby, their fates become inextricably linked. And no one - least of all Sue - could have predicted the consequences...

The story grips you from the very beginning! Martina Cole delivers every time and the narrator Jacqueline King is superb! she lends each character a totally different voice and you can almost see them in your minds eye. I know that I will definitely come back to this book over and over again.

Firstly this is the best narration ever, Jacqueline King is superb, her voices genuinely sound like different people and kids are hilarious.
Laugh out loud humour and stomach churning heartbreak in equal measures.

My favourite Martina Cole book so far. The study of family dynamics and the cycle of abuse is actually more fascinating than just hard men. Though of course there are plenty of them.

This is a great read. It gives a vivid account of a young girl growing up in a harsh environment with little love at home and no real family life. The young girl had to grow up early and then have the same mistakes happen all over again. It comes to a reasonably happy ending through the good actions from the most unlikely people and portrays the changes that take in people over their lives. The book portrays the harsh realities of a young girl growing up in an abusive household in the East End of London and yet she turns out to be a loving person who only wants to provide the best for her family.

it's always a special surprise to when a book can steal you away into the past or future.

This book lets you live in the era and smell the air that the characters breathe.

I got lost, was sickened by the treatment handed out by the antagonists and yet I was warmed by the tenacity of the others.

Life in all its happiness and despair mixed to deliver a story that demands to be told, need to be heard because it is true.

Enjoy!

Not what I expected, far better
