While her famous employer is happily back home at Mallowan Hall, wrestling with her Belgian detective’s dilemma on board the Orient Express, Phyllida is finding her local renown as a sleuth has put her in high demand. A distraught Vera Rollingbroke suspects her husband of infidelity and has invited Phyllida to a dinner party to observe his behavior, particularly in regard to one Genevra Blastwick.

What she does observe at the party is that Genevra craves attention, in contrast to her shy sister Ethel. Genevra introduces a game called Two Truths and a Lie, and one of her questionable statements is that she once witnessed a murder. At this bold claim, the guests react with disbelief and pepper her with questions. Genevra remains cagey, withholding details, but insists this is not her lie.

The next morning Phyllida learns poor Ethel was purposely run down by a motorcar the previous night while inexplicably walking home alone from the party. She fears Genevra may have been the target, which means someone at the party is a killer—twice over. A chilling thought. With Genevra in potential danger—and Inspector Cork proceeding ponderously as usual—Phyllida takes it upon herself to unmask the killer. With two murders to solve, she will need to grill Genevra and the guests as well as re-examine any past sudden deaths or disappearances. I agree with the other reviews I loved these books but now Phyllida sounds like a drab old lady her viv has gone and the narrator has not captured her at all. You're thinking why would Bradford look at this old women. One other author note for the editor. Previous books appreciated that she was Mrs mallowan throughout her married name given she'd moved on privately from Mrs Christie. The author seems to forget this until chapter 5 when she introduces her thus. It was irritating prior. Also editing for British English given Mrs mallowan would not speak like an American.... Hoping to get back better next time or ill be leaving this series here regretfully.

Enjoyed the story but as others have said the new narrator makes Mrs Bright sound elderly. A tip for listeners is to increase the speed to 1.1 or 1.15 which will move the story on at a more even pace and make Mrs Bright sound closer to her age.

So disappointed as have been waiting for this new book with eager anticipation only to have it spoilt by this new narrator. Her voice is too old and there is hardly any differentiation between the characters which is making it difficult to know who is saying what. I am struggling to continue listening !!

I was so looking forward to the release of this book. I'm glad to say it didn't disappoint. All the stories in the series have been very good. I was also curious to see how Mrs Bright and Mr Bradford's relationship would evolve, if at all. Again, I was not disappointed. I thought the author found the perfect balance. I'm really trying not give anything away.
I did notice the audio book wasn't read by the same person. It took me a couple of chapters to get used to. But the performance was good as well.
There is one problem with these books: they make me crave for more!!
I'd love to read another gripping story and find out that our incredible detective gets a ring on her finger. Maybe after her good friend, the doctor, gets married. All whilst solving a murder. It'd be amazing...

The latest story suffers from a mismatch between character and narration. Mrs Bright, meant to be in her mid‑40s, is voiced as though she has aged four decades, coming across like an old‑age pensioner. This undermines her vitality and makes the character feel inconsistent with her intended age. Bring back Mrs Bright’s youthful energy, vitality, and voice — same for Bradford.... no disrespect to the narrator, but no, just no...
