Summary

From Wall Street Journal bestselling author Melinda Leigh comes the first thrilling novella in the Rogue Justice series.

When Detective Seth Harding responds to shots being fired, he faces a familiar sight: a double homicide. However, he is shocked to find a young boy chained in the basement. The terrified child refuses to speak, but Seth knows he is the key to something sinister.

Reluctantly, Seth calls the only social worker he trusts with the traumatized boy - his wife. Carly is recovering from her own trauma suffered on the job, but she can't turn away from this case, not from another child in trouble. With torrential rain bearing down, threatening to isolate their little town in a killer flood, Seth and Carly know the best way to keep the boy safe from danger is to take him back to their farm.

But danger is as relentless as the storm. And it's following them all the way home.

New novella from Melinda Leigh

Melinda Leigh follows her four Rogue River Novellas series with the first book in her new Rogue Justice series. The two series have exactly the same characters and the same setting, so Rogue Justice series is merely a continuation of Rogue River. The novellas are set in the real sparsely populated Rogue River and Rogue Valley region of southern Oregon. However, Rogue County and the name of the small town are fictitious. The protagonists are married couple Seth and Carly Harding. Carly comes from the leading family in the county where her dad was sheriff and her brothers are in law enforcement. Her husband is a detective. Her mom is the stabilizing force in the family and in the county.

The series are very family focused, but the crimes are real and horrible. Think of the two series as solid police procedurals with strong elements of mystery and suspense, and also with a strong family flavor. I enjoy Melinda Leigh's Rogue novellas and recommend these 3 hour audio books. Kate Rudd does a fine job of narrating.

sad face

I usually love stories by Melinda Leigh but I just didn't care for this one, the choice of narrators was also unfortunate.

Good story but too short.

Good story but finished too soon. The story should have gone on. I thought it was an abrupt ending.

So so

It is ok, not enough depth for me. Also it seemed rushed and so much left out to keep it a short book. Not bad, but not great either.

Hard to enjoy

The story itself is not bad, but the reader was very mechanical. At times it sounded almost like a robotic reading. The result being it was very difficult to enjoy this book.

Short but good

The book was about half as long as I had expected but the content was good. My disappointment was with the performer. Her reading had the tone of a news reporter making statements & was overly annunciated. Made it difficult to get into rhe story.

Wanted more!

I hope there is a sequel because it left me wanting more. Like what happened with the father. How’s the brother going to substitute the loss. Just want more.
