Summary

As 1941 draws to a close, brave young men are fighting for freedom in countries across the globe. But for Sub-Lieutenant Harry Gilmour, washed up in neutral Spain alongside 'interned belligerents' from both sides of the war, hostilities have come to a pause.

Before long, his unlikely comrades must once again become his enemies, and he is back at the frontline of the battle for the Mediterranean. But aboard the submarine HMS Umbrage, operating in the waters off Malta, Harry is soon reminded that allies can be more dangerous than foes. When his volatile skipper is lost at sea, it falls to Harry to take charge of the boat - and of the lives of the men who now depend on him.

Ashore, there is another lesson: how war drives its wedge between more than just nations. Shirley is waiting for him back in Scotland, but the world offers many distractions for a young man...As Malta is besieged from the air and home seems ever further away, Harry must summon all his courage not only to stay alive - but also to forge in himself the nerve and the wisdom necessary to shoulder the responsibility of command.

The boat once more at sea!

Mr Gilmore's story continues to be enjoyable and well told and in it's telling it reflects the sacrifice and bravery of the people of Malta and its defenders. Looking forward to the next exciting book.

A brilliant story of submariners

A brilliant story of submariners base in Malta during the Second World War. With knowledge of how they operated and that of Malta flesh pots.

Another Great Yarn

Can't wait to read the next book in the series! Fast paced and full of great descriptions. Especially Malta and Valletta. Having visit he island I could picture the streets, harbour and the Fort. Next up? The Bonny Boy... Which looks like an interesting meeting between our hero and his first commander.

Good yarn but really just more of the same.

Harry slowly moves up the ladder. The activities and challenges change a little but still the same story..... excellently narrated though. If you've heard the first two this will be pleasant enough and worth a listen but I think this marks the end of the series for me. Yes, another book might see exactly what you might hope for but it's almost in here anyway.

If you liked 1 & 2 this is simply more. If you didn't like 1 &/or 2 then don't worry about hearing this one.
