Suzy is a small striped cat with long white whiskers, who lives in a French seaside village with a fisherman and his four sons. She likes living in France, chasing butterflies and being stroked the wrong way. She doesn't like straying too far from home. Story
Told from four-year-old Laura's point of view, this story begins in 1871 in a little log cabin on the edge of the Big Woods of Wisconsin. Laura lives in the little house with her pa, her ma, her sisters Mary and Carrie, and their trusty dog, Jack. Pioneer life is sometimes hard for the family, since they must grow or catch all their own food as they get ready for the cold winter. But it is also exciting as Laura and her family celebrate Christmas with homemade toys and treats, do the spring planting, bring in the harvest, and make their first trip into town.

Harmony Parker thought animals much nicer than people, and saw everyone she knew as some non-human species. Her father, for example, was most definitely a bald-headed Sea Lion, her mother a tubby, fussy Pouter Pigeon, and her tiresome older sister a Siamese cat. But Harmony's parents would not allow her to have real pets of any kind – not even a harmless gerbil. Then Uncle Ginger arrived from India and gave Harmony a very special present ...

Summary
'Dear Father Christmas, I'm very sorry that you couldn't come last year because the chimney was bricked up. We asked Pa to unblock it, so you could get down this time, but he said he couldn't because the wind would come in and we'd all be very cold.'
Christmas is nearing, and for two little mice called Tumtum and Nutmeg, it is a very busy time of year. There are cakes to bake and hams to glaze, and ants to sugar. But when the mice discover that Arthur and Lucy may not be getting any presents this year, they set out to find Baron Toymouse to see if he can help. They have heard that the Baron is a crotchety old mouse, but surely he wouldn't let children go without presents at Christmas time....

Holiday Magic
This was one of the few holiday reads I read for 2017. It was everything I needed at the time, a bit of magic and whimsy. I had just finished rereading Big Little Lies, and while overall it ends on a good note, I is a bit heartbreaking.
I love that Nutmeg is such a clever character and that Tumtum is so supportive. Together they are perfectly charming.
