About this listen

How far would you go to protect the one you love?

Two years after surviving their ordeal at the hands of white supremacists, Alex Pascal and Sarah Kent have new identities, new careers, and a new home together. The FBI warned them to keep their heads down, and a small town in Maine seems like the perfect place to do this, until a chance occurrence sets in motion a chain of events that no one could have predicted. With enemies closing in and friends turning their backs, Alex and Sarah find themselves fighting not only for their freedom, but for their lives.

Before I talk about the story, a quick note about my four-star rating for the narrator, Nicola Victoria Vincent. A four star review of her performance is probably close to a five star performance from anyone else. It's four star because it does feel like North American accents are slightly out of her comfort zone. None of the accents are bad, some of them very good, but not quite at her usual standard.

The story. It's pacey, and as the early chapters unfold, the depth and momentum that is the history of the characters carries you forward. The way the world, the characters and the situation are presented is so wonderfully seamless. No big lumps of exposition slowing things down, and any flashbacks are presented in ways that move the plot forward, and reveal more about the characters - both large and small - and how they all relate to one another.

Every character is a full human personality, regardless of how small a part they may play, and how brief the interactions. The whole world exists, and as a listener it is easy to fully immerse myself. It all feels so real, so ... present. Cari's gift is prodigious, and I highly recommend all her works.

Beware, there are some seriously uncomfortable moments, and being so present in the action can feel a bit much.

With Tumbledown, Cari Hunter once again demonstrates her unmatched ability to weave high-stakes crime with deeply human stories. This sequel takes everything that made Desolation Point and Snowbound so compelling and raises the bar—tighter plotting, even more suspense, and characters you can’t help but root for.

Hunter’s writing is razor-sharp, blending gritty realism with heart-stopping action. The story unfolds against an atmospheric backdrop that is as unforgiving as it is beautiful, heightening the sense of danger at every turn. The pacing is relentless yet perfectly balanced with moments of tenderness and vulnerability, which makes the suspense all the more impactful. Hunter doesn’t just deliver a thriller; she delivers a fully immersive world where every decision carries weight and every relationship feels authentic.

The audiobook narration by Nicola Victoria Vincent is a triumph. Her ability to embody the characters—giving each one a distinct voice and emotional depth—pulls the listener in completely. Vincent’s narration captures the grit, the fear, and the resilience of Hunter’s characters, amplifying the tension during action sequences and softening beautifully in the quieter, more intimate exchanges. Her performance is nuanced, compelling, and entirely addictive.

Together, Hunter’s gripping storytelling and Vincent’s masterful narration create a listening experience that’s both thrilling and emotionally satisfying. Tumbledown is the kind of audiobook that keeps you looking for extra minutes in your day just so you can listen to one more chapter.

Verdict: Tumbledown is an unmissable addition to Cari Hunter’s catalogue, brought vividly to life by Nicola Victoria Vincent’s exceptional narration. Fans of crime, suspense, and character-driven drama will find themselves completely captivated
