It is old, and there's lots of repetition, and sometimes the author takes a while to get to his point. However this is a small cross to bear, and arguably good for today's reader to practice patience - truly good things don't come, after all, in rushes of instant gratifications...
I must remark on the narration. At many times in this book I'd like to give Kevin O'Brien 5 stars. It's not easy to read these old texts and he did a better job than many narrators I've had the fortune to listen to.
Sometimes I feel like it would be good to employ retired theology professors to read these books, but even then it would probably be impossible to avoid all mistakes. It does sometimes sound like Mr O'Brien isn't very familiar with some of the vocabulary, and the old grammar structures used. I don't want to complain about that though. In some ways it forced me to listen more carefully and translate what I was hearing into its true sense (according to my limited understanding at least).
Then just before the end there's a very good, almost excellent reading of the full 150 decades of the rosary (before Saint Pope John Paul ii added the luminous mysteries). I hope I will be able to listen to this again and again over the coming years.
Unfortunately there is one, for me at least, extremely big problem with parts of the narration. Maybe it's because I'm British, or because I'm not used to the enthusiastic theatrical (evangelical dare I suggest?) reading of the bible.
It sounds to me, across many long readings of the bible and other texts (not the main book) as if Mr O'Brien took up narrating bible stories after being rejected by the Hammer Horror producers. He really gets into character - in an extreme way. He makes many characters sound really evil, and the voices of others are too sickly or sweet. I love listening to the bible, but this was very hard for me, and I don't think it does justice to the Holy text.
I don't want to libel the man. I'm sure he did his best and with good will. However when you get to the additional readings at the end of the audiobook, brace yourself and pray for patience, forgiveness and forbearance.
Apart from that one sad note, thoroughly recommended.
