A missing man leads Jack Haldean straight into danger...

Mark Helston, the rising star of Hunt Coffee Limited, was successful and popular, with plenty of money and everything to live for. Yet at half past seven on the evening of the ninth of January, 1925, he walked out of his Albemarle Street flat and disappeared.

Desperate to know what happened to Mark, his uncle, old Mr Hunt, appeals to Jack Haldean. Inspector Bill Rackham of Scotland Yard thinks it’s a thankless task. Perhaps, says Jack, but why should Mark Helston vanish? And then Jack finds a body...

"A classic mystery in the style of Philip Macdonald’s Anthony Gethryn stories; complex, insouciant and very British" (Kirkus Reviews)

….by John Sackville. His narration is flawless and perfectly pitched. No silly voices or ‘over’acting. I wish all the books were read by him. A good Story in this detective series, well worth a credit, please write some more Miss Gordon-Smith. Thank you.

Masterly performance ….

I enjoyed listening to this book as it is well written, the characters are engaging, and it rattles along at a good pace. It loses a star because the solution was a bit too convoluted, calling for both luck and tremendous resourcefulness on the villains part. Also the body count is very high!

Elaborate crime

Excellent reading and performance by John Sackville made this 1920s mystery particularly enjoyable and entertaining.

This is the third audiobook by Dolores Gordon-Smith that I have listened to and they have all been most entertaining and quite gripping. The reader is fabulous; he really makes the characters come alive and has a gorgeous voice. I just wish that all the books in this series were available on Audible, not just three from the middle of the series. Jack is quite a hero, especially with John Sackville’s voice and we all need a bit of escapism from time to time. Please record more.
