Summary

While Captain Aubrey worries about repairs to his ship, Stephen Maturin assumes the centre stage; for the dockyards and salons of Malta are alive with Napoleon's agents, and the admiralty's intelligence network is compromised.

Maturin's cunning is the sole bulwark against sabotage of Aubrey's daring mission. All of Patrick O'Brian's strengths are on parade in this novel of action and intrigue, set partly in Malta, partly in the treacherous, pirate-infested waters of the Red Sea.

another great action

As I finish each of these unabridged versions of the Aubrey Maturin novels I am delighted to find another waiting in the wings.Ric Jerroms easy style and fabulous narration is a joy to listen to.He has for me captured the very essence of Jack Aubrey and the Eminent Stephen Maturin.I am only delighted extremely to move on to "The far side of the world" now waiting in my library.

another masterclass in historical fiction

Jack and Stephen once again take to the sea to avoid troubles on land. However political machinations within the British intelligence service begin to unravel Jack's mission and start a train of events leading to danger and compromise.

Another entertaining instalment

More of the same from O'Brian, with yard-arms and missen top-masts aplenty. Ends rather abruptly, no doubt setting up for a good scrap in the next book

Enjoyed the book, but

The story is good but at the end you are left in mid air, you need to get the next book to find out what happens next. Many of POB’s books have left me this way, but still enjoy them.
