When The Far Pavilions was first published 19 years ago, it moved the critic Edmund Fuller to write this: "Were Miss Kaye to produce no other book, The Far Pavilions might stand as a lasting accomplishment in a single work comparable to Margaret Mitchell's achievement in Gond With the Wind." From its beginning in the foothills of the towering Himalayas, M. M. Kaye's masterwork is a vast, rich, and vibrant tapestry of love and war that ranks with the greatest panoramic sagas of modern fiction.

In the India of 1942, two rapes take place simultaneously - that of an English girl in Mayapore, and that of India by the British. Indulge the Five Senses of your Imagination!
Every minute of this marathon listen was a joy! Rosemary Davis' dulcet narration carried one over the high seas into an exotic and thrilling world; with her multi-voiced talent she convincingly portrayed the diverse and complex characters of this extraordinary novel. Having read and loved M.M. Kaye's 'The Far Pavilions' - Audible, please record this too! - I was keen to sample further offerings from this novelist and was not disappointed. The depth of her research and knowledge of her chosen subject makes one feel that one is actually there, in a three-dimensional world where all one's senses are involved! When it was finished I felt quite bereft. I wish there were 10 stars to give to this book.

Absolutely loved it!!!
I picked this book on a little bit of a whim and loved it. I now have a vague crush on Rory Frost!!! Even though it's a bit of an epic at 30 hours, it seemded to whizz by!! When I reached the end, I had a big sigh to myself. Now what am I going to listen to???

Highly recommended
This is one of my all-time favourite books by one of my favourite authors.
Trade Wind is a superb romantic novel but also so much more. The descriptions of Zanzibar are wonderful and transport you to the island and back into the period. The characters are beautifully and expertly brought to life. Within the book there are several sub-plots which all tie together to create a compelling epic.
I agree with the other reviewer that Audible should produce more M M Kaye audiobooks.
I also agree with the other reviewer that Rosemary Davis reads this book brilliantly. Her accents are faultless and she brings the characters to life perfectly.
Highly recommended - a gem

Great story, great reading
Having read this book years ago, I was keen to hear it on audio book. I wasn't disappointed - the book was as good as I remembered it, and the reading was excellent, with Rosemary Davis coping very well with the different accents. And while it was long, it was extremely enjoyable.
Any chance that you will record the Far Pavillions too?

WHAT A DIFFERENCE A READER MAKES
After first enjoying this book many years ago, I was surprised at how dated and rather quaint it now seems. However, it's still a good galloping adventure with lots of historic interest. This version was completely ruined by a terrible reader. Her ponderous style and constant verbal quirks - odd pronounciation (not explained by US v. UK), and misplaced emphases - irritated beyond belief. I gave up half way through and went back to my old dog-eared paperback.

amasing story, very well read
What did you like most about Trade Wind?
The store is long but keeps you interested due to the very varied and interesting characters. It is very well read.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Captain Emory Frost, because he is funny, strong willed and makes you root for him to survive and get the girl !
Have you listened to any of Rosemary Davis’s other performances? How does this one compare?
sorry, not listened to any
Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Both, it is has very sad parts but also has some comical parts, mainly when Captain Frost is speaking to the very prim Miss Hero Hollis.
Any additional comments?
M M Kaye has not written many books but this is great, if a bit long. If you like stories that have a strong characters and with historical content, try Trade Winds.

Tedious beyond belief!
I am not one to give up on anything and will give credit where credit is due, also not in a habit of writing critical reviews especially about a book and having read Far Pavilions(which I loved) and Shadow of the Moon (not as good but despite the mis-pronounciation of some words, the narrator was clear and eloquent), I couldn't bear another page of the monotony...I don't know if it was only the story line or the whining voices the narrator - a woman herself, gave the female characters but I hang my head in shame for giving up on it.
Oh the joy of 29 hours of a listening to a book in anticipation of a epic author but only disappointment kept coming in waves with every chapter.
I have manned up and attempted to finish the book ...between other books and coming back to this one...and at Chapter 11, i just couldn't anymore...so farewell Trade Winds, there are so many books out there that I really can spend the time with just not this one!

An old fashioned novel, in many ways
If you recall that the original version of this novel was written in the early '60s, it does help to put into perspective some of the aspects that wouldn't be acceptable today - the language, and the obvious unpalatable elements of the romance. However, IF you can put that to one side, it's a great story, and caused me to go back to my history books to learn more about Zanzibar and some of the events described. MM Kaye has a great ability for descriptions and although the book is long, it rattles along at a pretty good pace.
Ms Davis' narration was very good - she seemed to capture the essence of the annoyingly sanctimonious Hero very well.

Response to reviews
I looked at this book for some time trying to decide if it was something I wanted to hear. Finally I read the customer reviews.
The first thing that struck me was the customer who said he/she didn't like the narrator. I was surprised after hearing the sample. Now that I'm listening to the book I think I sort of understand why. I think she's very good but somehow her style doesn't quite match the writing style. She's certainly not hurting the book and I'm glad she's doing it, but there is something that's just not quite right at times. She pauses in the wrong places and doesn't pause when one is needed. That's a small thing and it's not bothering me much. I probably wouldn't have noticed it if I hadn't been looking for something after that review.
But the review that convinced me to listen to the book was from Mary, who insisted that being historical does not a historical novel make; at least not without gritty sex scenes. I wonder what kind of history books they had in her school. "When Debbie Did Dallas", perhaps? :)
At first that review made me angry. I've been listening to and enjoying an occasional historical novel since the 1950's. Some of my very favorite books are historical novels. Books such as "The Egyptian", "The Robe", "Spirit Lake", the books of Kenneth Roberts, etc. These are fine and worthy books. So I found it insulting to one of my enjoyed genres to have them confused with porn.
Well, I calmed down and now that seems pretty silly. I'm sure Mary is a very nice person who, with a little exposure to literature would come to undersatand the difference in porn and historical novels.
So thank you, Mary. You've taught me a little something. And you've done me another favor as well. Because of you I've begun listening to "Trade Winds" and enjoying it. It's not at all what I expected but so far it's excellent. I'm not far enough along to know it's going to turn out well but I have a very good feeling about it.

Very Interesting Read!
Very interesting story with just enough romance (well, perhaps I could have used a little more!)This author does a great job with bringing in historical facts and creating a fictional story around them. I have a whole new outlook on the pestilence and plagues that swept through Africa in the late 1800's. Truly I had a hard time sleeping a couple of nights just thinking about the Cholera! "Hero" the heroine really grows on you. She was so annoying for the first half of the book. But the story is about self awareness and change, and moral character...and Hero turns out to be quite an extraordinary woman in the end.

Kept me listening
I stumbled on this title when I was rifling through amazon.com romance forums for recommendations. The length was a little daunting, but after the first five minutes I was hooked. This book was originally released in 1963 and doesn't contain the graphic sex scenes that are common in today's romances. But the story was engrossing and was full of twists and turns. The secondary characters and the historical backdrop were also well done. I liked the story so much that I bought a copy of the book (it's not on Kindle yet). This is a story that's worth more than one listen/read.

Well written romance, exotic locale
This is essentially a romance, but a very well written one that takes place in a wonderfully exotic location. And since the author spent a lot of time in Zanzibar she is able to paint a very vivid portrait of a time and place long gone. What I loved most was the backdrop the characters moved through, even the parts that were raw and bleak.
If you enjoy being transported to different times and places, you'll enjoy this book.

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
Simple characters following an immature romance story line.

No
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
Maybe for a listener who isn't attracted to lots of action and suspense. The book is pretty bland.

So so
This novel was all promise and no real delivery. It could have been so much more and it never quite got there. I was very disappointed as I loved M.M. Kaye's, Far Pavilions. This was nowhere close to that novel.
The narrator was horrible when she did the American accents. She would have been better off not doing the accent since it really made listening to an already boring story even more annoying. It truly was detracting! The main Character Hero was probably the stupidest heroine I have ever run across. One after another stupid acts all the way to the dull ending of a rather dull story .All of the ingredients were there but the author never developed any if it. I wouldn't recommend wasting your time on this one.
