Pyrre Lakatur is not, to her mind, an assassin, not a murderer - she is a priestess. At least, she will be once she passes her final trial. The problem isn't the killing. The problem, rather, is love. Story
After the War of the Gods, the demons were cast out and fell to the world. Mankind was nearly eradicated by the seemingly unstoppable beasts, until the gods sent the great hero, Ramrowan, to save them. He united the tribes, gave them magic, and drove the demons into the sea. Ever since the land has belonged to man and the oceans have remained an uncrossable hell, leaving the continent of Lok isolated. It was prophesized that someday the demons would return, and only the descendants of Ramrowan would be able to defeat them. They became the first kings, and all men served those who were their only hope for survival.

According to mythology, mankind used to live in 'The Tranquiline Halls': heaven. But then the Voidbringers assaulted and captured heaven, casting out God and men. Men took root on Roshar, the world of storms, but the Voidbringers followed. The Almighty gave men powerful suits of armor and mystical weapons, the Shardblades. Led by 10 angelic Heralds and 10 orders of knights known as Radiants, mankind finally won (or so the legends say).

Summary
The realm burns. Vaelin Al Sorna is tired of war. He's fought countless battles in service to the Realm and Faith. His reward was the loss of his love, the death of his friends, and a betrayal by his king. After five years in an Alpiran dungeon, he just wants to go home.
Reva intends to welcome Vaelin back with a knife between the ribs. He destroyed her family and ruined her life. Nothing will stop her from exacting bloody vengeance - not even the threat of invasion from the greatest enemy the Realm has ever faced.
Yet as the fires of war spread, foes become friends and truths turn to lies. To save the Realm, Reva must embrace a future she does not want - and Vaelin must revisit a past he'd rather leave buried.

Better than book 1!
For once, book 2 is better than book 1. This book picks up directly after the end of book 1 and has more POVs than the first. I found this a bit irritating - just as things are getting interesting with one character, we switch to another. There's just as much murder and mayhem (more, actually) and the story whirls in directions I could not have guessed at.
We also get more info about the evil that threatens from the Valerian empire, the implosion of one faith and the the growth of dogma of another. It's impossible not to draw some parallels with the religions that plague our world.
Some character development didn't make sense to me. We meet Reeva when she hunts Valen to kill him. She's a surly, fanatical pain in the arse while Valen trains her. Then, with very little transition, she becomes a brave, upstanding member of a family. Odd.
The book is good. The narrator, though, is poor. There is no character depiction of voice, tone, accent like an audiobook should have. He simply reads, all voices the same, gender, background, social heirachy. It's disappointing, to say the lease.

Ok but not as good as the first in series
I enjoyed the first book. But this one just seems to be a never ending series of battles. Hard to keep track of some of the minor characters, someone would appear and the reader is obviously supposed to know who they are but several times I was left wondering who on earth are they again?
Not terrible, but not great.

Changes focus to female characters.
Really disappointed in this. Loved the fist volume but I am 20 chapters in and the main character has not said a word in anger, let alone fought. The focus has shifted almost entirely to female characters which is fine but absolutely not what I was expecting or what I bought this story for. The story is still decent and if you were a fan of the new Teela centred He-Man series, then you will probably like this. I have rarely not finished a book but I am unlikely to carry on with this. Hope this helps people to know what they're getting into with this.

Disappointing
If this book wasn’t for you, who do you think might enjoy it more?
I can't believe that anybody who read the first book would not be disappointed by the second.
What was most disappointing about Anthony Ryan’s story?
The lack of drive and story. So many POVs that it just trundled it's way towards the end. Nothing surprising or original just plodded on
Who might you have cast as narrator instead of Steven Brand?
Somebody who could differentiate between the characters. He doesn't have a bad voice but it was the same one all the way through the book. Nothing to indicate which character was speaking or their emotions.
What character would you cut from Tower Lord?
Most of them.
Any additional comments?
Not worth the money. I will be asking for my credit back

compelling story
The story and reader were great but the production had few problems with different levels of voice. Perhaps they were caused by trying to fix a mistake.
