Summary
To the Lighthouse is at once a vivid impressionist depiction of a family holiday, and a meditation on a marriage, on parenthood and childhood, on grief, tyranny, and bitterness.
Its use of stream of consciousness, reminiscence, and shifting perspectives gives the novel an intimate, poetic essence, and at the time of publication in 1927 it represented an utter rejection of Victorian and Edwardian literary values.

beautyfully sensitiven, but demanding.
reading a sumary of the plot as you go along helped greatly, so one could enjoy the prose.

A strange classic
It is a mysterious combination of thoughts, life and philosophy, but gripping if one persists. Phillida Law reads the complex text beautifully.

T the Lighthouse
I enjoyed this very much.It was so well written and very true of all of us wondering what others think and feel in all situations.I especially loved narration by Phylidia Law.She has a wonderful voice.

Excellent
The delicacies and intricacies of Virginia Woolf will not be to everyone's taste ("Nothing ever happens!" is the usual complaint) but her observation of the minutiae of human life, and most notably the internal life of the characters, is unsurpassed. Phyllida Law's reading is perfection, with just the right pace and tone to capture the poetry of the writing. Also, importantly, it is a reading and not an acted performance - so differentiation of characters but without silly accents! For me, it was a masterclass in how to deliver a book's subtlety and variety in a way that, I'm pretty sure, would have been loved by the author.

A narrative masterclass
There is a reason this book is listed as one of the top English language novels of the twentieth Century , and I might suggest that this reading by Phyllida Law is the best way of accessing it, I could go on in an endless tirade of praise but it would be superfluous, and entirely inappropriate .

What a load of pretentious drivel
I’m sorry to say this is quite simply the worst book I have ever read in my entire existence.
And yes that includes “World war one trench warfare” I was made to read at school!
Absolutely nothing happened, in the end the noise coming out of my headphones had the same numbing effect as listening to next doors dog barking. Literally if someone asked me “what was it about”
Nothing would be the answer, it was about absolutely nothing happening.
