THE FIFTH GEORGE SMILEY NOVEL

A mole, implanted by Moscow Centre, has infiltrated the highest ranks of the British Intelligence Service, almost destroying it in the process. And so former spymaster George Smiley has been brought out of retirement in order to hunt down the traitor at the very heart of the Circus - even though it may be one of those closest to him.

The first part of le Carré's acclaimed Karla Trilogy, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy sees the beginning of the stealthy Cold War cat-and-mouse game between the taciturn, dogged Smiley and his wily Soviet counterpart.

The one book I listen at .85 speed, as it makes Simon Russel/Beale’s narration into something akin to poetry and you appreciate more keenly than ever John Le Carré’s exquisite turn of phrase. I wish I could hear it for the first time again. This is my third go and doubtless my last.

A masterpiece read by one

I love this book and have read it several times. I am not sure what made me think to try the audiobook book as well but I am so glad I did. Whether you have read this before or not, this is an exceptional production.

Outstanding book with an equally compelling performance

This is such a great novel. Le Carré is a writer of supreme ability & this, for me, is probably his finest work. It is chock full of his characteristic traits: intelligent, witty, insightful, full of careful observations, note perfect dialogue, tightly knitted prose, & intriguing , complex plots.
Having come to his work only recently I’m not sure why it took me so long - but I’m making up for lost time now, this is the fourth ‘Smiley’ I’ve listened to in just over a week.
It’s very important to add that Simon Russell Beale‘s narration is exemplary. I first heard his voice narrating Pat Barker’s “Regeneration Trilogy” which is perhaps my favourite ever listening experience, so when I read that he’d produced three of Le Carré’s books I immediately bought them even though I already had waiting in my library the original Michael Jayston recordings - and he’s dynamite too!
So, all in all, I can’t recommend this particular audiobook highly enough. As a standalone work or read as part of the ‘Smiley’ series or as part of the ‘Karla Trilogy’ (Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, The Honourable Schoolboy, and Smiley's People) it doesn’t matter.
A sublime listening experience.

George Smiley, Le Carre’s greatest creation, has been booted out of the ‘Circus’ - the nickname for the secret service. An exile, he’s out in the cold - and his old ally and erstwhile boss Control has died. But Smiley is brought back into the fold to investigate suspicions of a mole in the upper echelons of the organisation for which he once worked. While this process plays out, he’s trying to salvage his marriage after his wife’s adultery. It’s a relatively complex plot - but it works so well because of the expert characterisation and world-building. Le Carre’s novels are often about office politics - certainly in the Smiley titles - rather than action-driven. We hear about spying missions full of adventure and risk - but most of the time it’s second-hand. Smiley’s natural habitats are down-at-heel Whitehall offices and safe houses. Tinker, Tailor… is well-constructed. Essentially, Smiley interviews a number of people who may or may not be able to shed light on the mystery of the mole. It’s probably JLC’s greatest novel - though in some ways I prefer The Spy Who Came in From the Cold. That said, Smiley as a character is utterly beguiling, and Karla - his Russian spy chief nemesis - is an intriguing enemy. We never directly meet him - but he is unquestionably the Kremlin puppet-master. The narration is very well-done - not as good, perhaps, as the excellent Michael Jayston, who narrates other Smiley novels, but still more than an admirable job. This was a joy from beginning to end, and it’s whetted my appetite to revisit the BBC adaption with Alec Guinness as Smiley, and the 2011 movie starring Gary Oldman. (I thought at the time I saw the film that the telly series was superior, by some margin - but would like to watch it again…)
