Summary

From the Sunday Times Number One bestselling author of A Discovery of Witches, now a major Sky TV series, a novel about what it takes to become a vampire.

From human to vampire ...

Marcus Whitmore was made a vampire in the eighteenth century. Over two hundred years later, he finds himself in love with Phoebe Taylor, a human who decides to become a vampire herself.

But her transformation will prove as challenging now as it was for Marcus when he first encountered Matthew de Clermont, his sire.

While Phoebe is secreted away, Marcus relives his own journey from the battlefields of the American Revolutionary War, through the treachery of the French Revolution to a bloody finale in New Orleans. His belief in liberty, equality and brotherhood challenged at every stage by the patriarchy of the de Clermonts.

What will he and Phoebe discover in one another when they are finally reunited at Les Revenants, beneath the watchful gaze of Matthew and his wife, Diana Bishop?

Sunday Times Number One bestselling author Deborah Harkness returns to the spellbinding world she created in A Discovery of Witches and, through the prism of an unconventional love story, explores the power of tradition and the endless possibilities for change.

Critic reviews

What a rich, thrilling and educational tale it is... A captivating and romantic ripping yarn (E L James)
This is a glorious, finely-wrought gem of a book: intelligent, thoughtful, intricate... I could lose myself in here and never want to come out: what better accolade can there be? ...Utterly enchanting on every level (Manda Scott)

A lovely read, but no gripping story line or plot

The story flowed along well enough, interesting but not gripping in any significant way. no mountains to climb, or significant enemies to vanquish. No important friend or foe was killed or achived their goals. The constant references to actual historical characters became boring after a while, as these characters were not woven into the overall plot well and therefore lost their impact. Overall just about ok, well below the standards achieved in the All Souls Trilogy . As the Pheeby and Marcus story did nothing more than outline the process of becoming Vampire and indicate the problems they have with their past deeds etc. Really so what, comes to mind, nice to know but when is this book going to get going. the same applies to the twins etc. This book is at best a filler, until BH comes up with a another serious plot line. disappointed with this cheap attempt to grab some of the Christmas book market. BH is better than this.

Oh dear...how disappointing

So I'm a fan of the All Souls books so very happy to see another pop up. I knew it wasn't a direct continuation but was happy to spend time in that world. But sadly it's lost its sparkle. We're has the magic gone? I'm not just talking about Diana's but the magic in the writing that got you hooked in the previous books! This is basically 3+ story's with a tenuous connection to each other. Non of them are done justice and the segways into them is clumsy in the extreme! I'm so disappointed. If this was a first book there would be no takers. Please please let the magic come back again because I'm losing faith

Time's Convert is not as good as it's predecessor

Historically interesting but just failed to hit the mark where discovery of witches was a bulls eye

Great story, bad narrator

I loved all the other books which also has a great narrator. Sadly this one had a voice that sounded like she was whispering most of the time and she Mispronounced key names.

Apart from the narrator I was pleased to find this addition to a trilogy I love and know so well. Is it the best? No, does it give us another journey into this wonderful world? Absolutely.

I Won’t however be listening to this book repeatedly like I did the others purely down to the poor narration

Nb: until this book I never really appreciated how important and how much of an impact a narrator can have on a story. It never normally is something I consider. But my goodness this woman’s voice is grating.

Great book though!

Brilliant

Fantastic addition to the Discovery of witches trilogy. Marcuses memories of his human life and vampiric childhood as well as Pheobes transformation from human to matcuses mate. A lot of fun bits as well as we see Diana and Matthews struggles as parents and their children’s antics.

The art of being busy

This book is very busy and I found myself having to stop and work out what storyline we jumped to..having said all of that I am left wondering despite the busyness how far we actually moved in overall world Deborah is constructing

Slightly flat with little sparkle

I loved the All Souls trilogy, read them avidly and found them totally immersive. Unfortunately I did not have the same experience with this. I found the story lacked depth and although Marcus's character developed well, Phoebe's is shallow and weak. Sadly, I feel as though this was rushed in order cash in on the tv series and as such left me feeling underwhelmed and disappointed. I hope the next book proves me wrong, I so want to know what happens with the children and how Diana and Matthew deal with parenthood, lets hope it does.

You’ll want to read All Souls first.

I’ve always wanted more Miriam and Marcus airtime so this was great for that. The three plot lines work well together without being messy. I do suggest finishing the All Souls trilogy first, because this comes later chronologically so there are spoilers. The style is a bit different to the All Souls trilogy. I’ve seen a common critique is that the volatile, will they wont they romance is gone. However, all the relationships here seem to be based on concern, and as we all know, consent is sexy! So I actually liked it more.
Maarleveld was a good narrator and if I’d come across her first I’d have no complaints. However, Audible, SERIOUSLY please STOP switching them on us. Here’s a simple guideline: One narrator per universe.

Good

Changing the narrator was the only thing stopping a full five stars. Not that it was bad, that would be a disservice. It’s just that if you have experienced the preceding three books the change alters your perceptions.
Nevertheless it’s an enjoyable book and worth it.
