Trying times for the Majere twins..

The entire series (3 books) is read by Ax Norman, who is a capable narrator, but lacks the ability to add that extra dimension by creating voices for the characters, they are all monotone, which means yo have to listen that little bit harder to know which character is talking. The series concentrates of the Majere brothers, Raislin and Caramon. This book I'm reviewing here (Book 1) has a good story content as it is the start of the adventure and pulls in Tasslehoff Burrfoot for most of the book and includes his antics which add a certain relief to the main story, which can get a little bogged down while we learn what Raislin plans are and how they involve the cleric Crysania. We also start to see how Caramon develops his feelings towards his brother. The story is not full of action, but concentrates of building the main characters and enveloping you in the world of Krynn, having said that, the story is gripping and makes you want to continue listening well into the night.

Brilliant

Loved these books which I read over and over when I was young. Great to listen to the story again. The change in narrator from the first trilogy took a bit of getting used to as Ax Norman reads quickly, otherwise fabulous.

Oh god, terrible narrator.

How did this narrator get the job? He is terrrriiiible.
I found myself many times, thinking about other things and not listening to the book. His voice was so boring and monotone.

Good thing I had read these books back in my teens.

Great book, poor narrator

Wonderful book spoiled by a poor narration. I loved these books as a teenager, such a pity to hear them ruined by a narrator who speaks very quickly in a somewhat annoying accent with no differentiation between character voices and clearly without the ability or interest to read ahead to determine how a line is intended to be delivered - the number of times the narrator says a line in total disagreement with the subsequent description of how it was said. At times quite difficult to determine when one character stops speaking and another one begins. As I was listening to this I was wondering whether dragging a random amateur off the street would have produced a better narration.

A Quantum Leap Forward

I expected Weis and Hickman to have improved between trilogies, but by Fizban, this is a quantum leap! If you enjoyed the original Dragonlance books, you are almost certainly going to love this. Raistlin is back in all of his glory and this time he has upped the scheming, charming and displays of power to eleven. The Hourglass Mage is ready to ascend, and I am ready for the next book in the trilogy.

Finally a fitting narrator!

After the horror show of Chronicles, I am so glad they have someone who can pronounce the names sensibly and stays away from stereotypes for voicing the characters.

Decent treatment of a fantasy classic. Recommended.

Great story!

I've read these books before and loved them, but I can't read them when driving! What was a bit of a let down was the narration. There was no differentiation in voices for different characters in any way, and emphasis during conflict or raised voices was done as if this was read aloud in a library.

Story great as ever

The story is amazing , well structured and the little romance is so exciting! I was just struggling with the narration-- quite evenly toned. I could not figure out who was the character speaking-- all of them sounded the same. In fact I've fallen asleep a few times-- so monotonous was the narration.
