Summary

You’re a survivor, aren’t you, Matilda? But what’s the point in surviving when everyone around you is dead?

When DCI Matilda Darke receives a mysterious telephone call, she immediately dismisses the threat. After all, the Homicide and Major Enquiries team are a regular target for prank calls.

But ignoring this warning might soon be the biggest regret of Matilda Darke’s life.

A lone gunman is on a deadly rampage around Sheffield, leaving a bloody trail in his wake. Taking his shots with a sickening precision, he’s about to leave his mark on the world and change Matilda and her team’s lives forever.

The next chilling instalment in the DCI Matilda Darke thriller series, perfect for fans of Patricia Gibney and Angela Marsons.

Brilliantly Gripping but Shocking

I have mixed feelings about this book. It has some brilliantly gripping writing with swift action and tension building moments .There are also some violently shocking scenes juxtaposed with banale banter.I nearly did not make it to the end but the voice actor got me there. For those tempted to give up, I would suggest soldiering on because there is some rewarding writing amongst the troughs. The narration in this saved the day for me.

I had been enjoying the series of Matilda Darke books and had bought into the characters. Difficult to critique without spolers but having established the key characters for six books the impact of the storyline in Book7 has a punch. I am not sure it would have the same impact on listeners new to the series .

There are plot reference to earlier books so beware spoilers if you have not read these books in order.

What!!!

Enjoyed the previous books although there seemed to be a gradual increase in horror and gore
This was like a violent computer game in written form with relationships and chatacters previously developed gone.
Will read the reviews carefully before reading another in this series although i forsee it will not be a cheerful read!!

Pure genius!

I read a lot of books, about 6 - 8 a week, but this has to be one of the best I read this year. The action is nonstop, with something happening all the time. The characters are very believable, and all have a place in the story. Extremely well written, and brilliantly narrated.

Michael Wood on top form

I have enjoyed all the DCI Darke books so far but this one is by far the best. It’s hard to see how Michael Wood will top this one. I’ve already downloaded the next in the series and can’t wait to see what HMET will get up to next.

One note of caution - it’s worth reading this series in order if you can as the crime in this one follows on from an earlier book in the series.

This book has broken me!!

OMG I had palpitations whilst listening to this book and by the end I was completely broken. It is totally and absolutely heartbreaking. This is my favourite Matilda Darke book so far despite the effect it has had on my metal health!! The whole team, includung Matilda are at risk and that is really all I can say without giving too much away. Bloody brilliant but make sure you have a box of tissues handy!!

Excellent narration, as always, by Stephanie Beattie.

Blimey!

You’ve got the cosy little Miss Marple office scenes in this series with snack drawer shenanigans, then a Quentin Tarantino style massacre outside the door. You could have just started another series, mate, if you wanted to knock off so many characters! Very implausible overall as far as the actions of the police and armed response team dithering about. Quite extraordinary.

This series is now becoming bizarre.

This is book 7 and although I have enjoyed the previous books - I have noticed a slide towards the graphic and an increasingly epic death toll. It’s as if the author has decided that the body counts must rise in line with the number of books in the series. It’s getting a bit mad. Not sure I want to bother with book 8 and up - by the time we get to book 12 some madman will be firing a nuclear bomb at Sheffield (all in order to kill Matilda)!

Such a hard upsetting read

I’ve listened to all the previous books in the series and really got to know the characters so this book was a hard read after all my favourites were killed.
