About this listen

Crime author Dick Markham is in love again; his fiancée, Lesley Grant, the mysterious newcomer to the village. When Grant accidentally shoots a fortune teller through the side of his tent at the local fair - following a very strange reaction to his predictions - Markham is reluctantly brought into a scheme to expose his betrothed as a suspected serial husband-poisoner. That night the enigmatic fortune teller - and chief accuser - is found dead in an impossible locked-room setup, casting suspicion onto Grant and striking doubt into the heart of her lover. Lured by the scent of the impossible case, Dr Gideon Fell arrives from London to examine the perplexing evidence and match wits with a meticulous killer at large.

I will always buy John Dickson Carr's books because I adore locked room mysteries and he was Master of them.

This is an early one and I have to admit that I knew who'd done it because I'd read a short story version of the book. However, the full length book is more detailed and interesting.

I prefer Jonathan Keeble as a narrator for Carr's books but Kris Dyer did a passable job, although sometimes it was hard to tell who was speaking.

All in all, it was a fun listen and I'd thoroughly recommend it.

Very Nice

I've read better Dickson Carr books, but this has several elements that fans will like: vilage setting, interesting suspects, a love story, strange elements. However, I think there are better stories from this era of his career, such as The Seat of the Scornful, or even better, the Carter Dickson book (yes, it's the same author) The Black Spectacles.

Unfortunately the narrator grated and didn't capture the characters. It really brought me out of the story. I would have returned it for this reason, but I had bought it rather than spent a credit, which made it ineligible. I'm afraid that the growth of audiobooks has come with a very uneven level of quality both in narrators and recording quality.

Mixed Thoughts

I persevered with this audio book-but the narrator drove me mad-awful simpering way each character spoke. The storyline was ok but definitely not enhanced by the narrator.

Awful Narrator

I’m afraid that eight hours of hesitating lisping narration is to much for me . How anyone with such a lisp could put themselves forward as a narrator and anyone would want to employ them is beyond me .

Awful narration ,
