Summary
Here is one of the greatest English comic novels read by incontrovertible king of English comic audiobook readers, Martin Jarvis. Three men, worried about their health and in search of different experiences, set off 'up the river' in a boat. Jerome's delightful novel, dating from 1900, paints a vivid picture of innocent fun.

Jerome and Jarvis
Combine the wit and lazy day descriptiveness of Jerome K Jerome with the mellifluous Martin Jarvis and you have the perfect recipe for the ultimate escape. Close your eyes and you are the fourth man (not including the dog) in the boat wending your way along the Thames, traveling at a more tranquil time and at a slower pace than is allowed today. Simply wonderful.

Marvellous reading of a classic comedy
Maartin Jarvis' reading of this is fantastic! He is one of the greatest narrators of them all.

A gentle, humorous and enjoyable read
Written with a wit and dry humour that is still fresh today, I thoroughly enjoyed this gentle story. The book relies on the humorous telling of every day events in the 1890's and so is very much "of a time", which, in my opinion, Martin Jarvis captures perfectly.
I have read that the book was originally meant to be a serious guide to the journey taken - mentioning the scenery, historic landmarks and recommending pubs, however, they ended up taking very much a back seat to the side stories of the passengers and their hapless exploits.

English self deprecation and ironic humour at its finest
A delight of English upper class banter and the foolishness of the man of leisure.

The writing is somewhat dated, obviously, but no less funny. Very enjoyable.

Didn't do it for me.
There is nothing at all wrong with either the book or the narration (which was really very good). Maybe a question of personal taste but it seems this classic has aged beyond my ability to really engage. It is very much "of an era" and undoubtedly deserving of it's reputation but, sadly, not my cup of tea in the end.

A bit of a struggle!
The book is essentially a series of anecdotes, wildly embellished to inject humour, stitched together to make a story.
The orator is very good, but the humour just does not work for me. Think ‘last of the summer wine’ at the end of the Victorian era and you pretty much have it.
The embellishments throughout the book we are just silly and got irritating very quickly. To be honest, I couldn’t wait for it to finish.
Just can’t recommend this one I am afraid.

classic book read well
I've loved this book for years and so getting it on Audible was great news. The narration is very good and is nearly a match for how I imagined the characters when reading.
I find the story quite timeless, although times have changed and circumstances are different, friends and their relationship with each other doesn't. Funny in parts as the three friends spend a week together in a boat rowing up the Thames, it also includes some historical reflection on the places they pass.
