Summary

There is a lot more to the story than just the light bulb, and there is a lot more to the invention of the light bulb than just Thomas Edison. One thing is for sure - he is still remembered as one of the greatest inventors of all time and perhaps the greatest that America has ever produced. In truth, Edison was a man who invented a lot of things while bringing about incredible advancements in many other things. With the stock ticker, the telegraph, the light bulb, and the motion picture, he may not have invented them, but he improved on them beyond any recognition. They would not be the technologies they are today without Edison’s great mind working on them.

Inside you’ll hearabout:

  • Born into a country of great change
  • The telegraph and the start of his genius
  • How Edison created the invention machine
  • Edison and the phonograph
  • It wasn’t always about success for Edison
  • The truth about the light bulb
  • The rivalry between Tesla and the “war of the currents”
  • Father of the motion pictures
  • The man behind the inventions
  • Edison’s greatest quotes
  • His death and the legacy he left behind
  • Remember him for the right reasons
  • And much more!

Thomas Edison seems to be remembered these days either as the man who invented the light bulb or as the man who didn’t. Without knowing any more about him, you are either giving him false praise for something he didn’t do or not taking into account all the other work he did.

Edison was a brilliant inventor

Edison was a brilliant inventor matched only by his work ethic. He was also a poor business man who unfortunately held some racist beliefs. Whether a fan of the man or not this book offers an in depth look into the life and habits of the man who's inventions shaped the 21st century.

Knowledgeable

I purchased this book because I knew very little about Thomas Edison, other than a somewhat general awareness of him that I learned in school, and I was hoping to learn a lot about the man and what he achieved. This book is incredibly superficial - giving just a brief overview of his life. If this is what you are looking for, it is an OK book. If, however, you are looking for an in-depth treatment of him look elsewhere

good one

Enjoyable biography of a great mind with a endless search for practicality in his inventions. Although his ego was his dominant shortfall, he was able to succeed by sheer quantity of innovation. Thoroughly enjoyed the book.

Interesting

Short re-cap of Edison's life, Interesting and enjoyable. He invented more things than I realized. Because of my hearing loss I liked that the narrator spoke slowly and distinctly.

Lacking....

I was disappointed with this book. it's not possible to capture the biography of a man like Edison in an hour and a half audiobook. I wanted a deep understanding of the man, his upbringing, and the things that shaped his life. There were a few details that I hadn't heard before but most of the content sounds like a list of things someone found on the internet and assembled in roughly the right chronological order.

I really enjoy reading biographies of great minds

I really enjoy reading biographies of great minds and historical influences, so of course I jumped at this book to get some more insight into the life and mind of Edison. What was really exciting for me was that my boyfriend, a notorious non-reader, grabbed up my digital copy of this book and has devoured it over the past couple days. He's really geeked out over it, and THAT is really exciting to me. I am a true scholar at heart and there isn't a time I don't have a book started to improve my own intellect and I typically have an educational or self-improvement audio book to listen to when I am driving - I DEVOUR information.
This book is great for both me and my boyfriend. He has read me parts of the book (before I started it) and has excitedly shared different facts and information that he has found intriguing regarding Edison's life and ideas.
This book is well written and an easy read with accurate information about the topic. I would definitely recommend getting this if you have any interest in learning about Edison and would be great for school-age children to increase their knowledge and interest in historical figures as well and encourage them to pursue their own dreams and ideas regardless of what struggles and obstacles they face. Edison is a great role model and inspirational figure - turn away from the Kardashians and ridiculous models society has today and reach towards something that will benefit yourself, your children, and society as a whole.

excellent

I only knew some broad strokes about Thomas Edison, so I was interested in learning more about him. My SO is more informed about him and I thought this book could give us some fun topics to discuss. Starting the book, I realized I knew nothing about his interesting childhood. Actually my SO didn't either, so I had the opportunity to to share this with him.
