About this listen

I’ve loved Magnus for as long as I can remember, but he’s always had his eyes on someone else. My magical familiar insists I make my move and get it over with before it’s too late. After all, Magnus and I have spent years together in highschool, but with his world falling apart on the eve of his greatest heartbreak, I finally take my chance.

There’s just one problem: while Magnus is heading off to college, I’m on the verge of being accepted into the Order Academy—a school in a magical realm I can’t tell anyone about, not even my parents. How could I confess my love without also telling him I’m leaving this world—and him—behind forever?

I can’t stand the thought of never knowing what might have been between us, so I’m going to risk it all—no matter the consequences.

One night is worth the risk... isn't it?

But Magnus is hiding a secret far darker than I ever imagined. And as I get closer, I realize I might just unravel more than I bargained for.

This is a tragic romantasy character origin story for an upcoming series.

This book may be short and the start of a series, but don't let that fool you — it hits like a wrecking ball. I love these smaller reads because they're quick and keep my mind busy. While many are just “fine” and some are downright bad, this one was something else entirely. It begins in such a simple, almost fluffy way that you think you know where it's going… and then it quietly starts slipping into something darker. The clues are there if you're paying attention, but nothing prepares you for just how far it falls. This is not a happily-ever-after, and once the story tips into that abyss, there's no climbing back out.

Lumi and Magnus completely stole my heart. Lumi is such a beautifully written character — strong and determined, yet with a fragility that bleeds through every page. There's something quietly heartbreaking about her, even before things begin to unravel. Magnus, on the other hand, feels like the promise of a truly great MMC: a gentleman, complex, kind, and hiding more beneath the surface than we or he could guess at. We don't get everything from him straight away, but the slow reveal only makes him more compelling. Watching their connection form, knowing something is coming, made every tender moment ache in the best and worst ways.

The story starts in the here and now, then later moves into another world, and that shift is where the twists and the real darkness take hold. I loved how the plot kept pulling the rug out from under me — just when I thought I knew what kind of book this was, it changed. The middle drags you into something raw and unsettling, and the ending… it broke my heart. I knew it would, but not like that. The pain was so sharp because it felt earned, honest, and deeply rooted in who these characters are.

Listening to the audiobook made it even more powerful, especially when the author spoke afterwards about the themes and her own background. That was what finally tipped me over into tears — something I almost never do. The writing is strong, the character depth is excellent, and by the time Magnus finally opens up, everything clicks into place in the most devastating way. This may be a short, almost prequel-like origin story, but it packs an enormous emotional punch. Don't judge it until you reach the end — it's absolutely worth every one of its five stars, and it's already earned a place at the top of my best books of 2026.

A sad but beautiful read
