Summary

From the USA Today best-selling author of The Circuit Saga comes this harrowing science fiction short story set in his Children of Titan Universe.

After 25 years serving as the lone human Monitor of the Interstellar Ark, Hermes, Orion is scheduled to be placed back in his hibernation chamber with the other members of the crew. Knowing that he will die there and be replaced before the ship's voyage is over, he decides that he won't accept that fate. Whatever it takes he will escape Hermes and see space again, even if it means defying the regulations of his only friend - the ship-wide artificial intelligence known as Dan.

If you found yourself curious about what happens to the Hermes Ark after it leaves Earth at the start of Rhett C Bruno's Titanborn, you won't want to miss this story!

My limit no one knows...

The Interstellar Ark,, Hermes, is heading for Tau Ceti and a planet likely to be suitable for human habitation. On board are exactly one thousand inhabitants, all but one, a Monitor to act as an aid to the ship's AI, are sleeping in pods as they journey. With only a few hours remaining to Orion before his time as Monitor comes to an end, he must choose a successor.

Narrator Justin Thomas James gives clear and sympathetic voice to Orion, the sixth monitor, as he ponders his final hours. With perfect pacing and intonation, his is an excellent performance.
A beautifully crafted short story by the author of the Titanworld series. It is atmospheric and charming, and very human
Taking under an hour to read, it is still guaranteed to leave a powerful impression. Recommended.

A great Children of Titan short story

An interesting look into "life" aboard an interstellar ark from the perspective of a lone caretaker.

It would be great to see more stories about the arks and their missions!

A satisfying Sci-Fi short story

This is a well-done short story that packs in a clear scenario with layers of choices that must be made. There is a minimal number of characters but we still get the sense that they fit within a larger story. There is emotion and suspense, and dare-I-say, even a satisfying conclusion.

I am not one who reads a lot of science fiction, but this taste of Rhett C. Bruno’s “world” makes me curious to try more.

How is it possible?

This audiobook totally amazed me.
Why?
So short and says everything!

Great narration.

No other author could have written this with such perfection.

Best one hour audiobook ever, and only Bruno the perfectionist could have written a beautiful story so short that every word counts.

Excellent short

Great short story that really adds to the series. This Long Vigil tells the story of what life is like for the lone monitor of the Ark ship Hermes. Each monitor serves for 25 years before the job is passed along to another. It's a very lonely existence with no one other than Dan, the ship's AI, to keep you company. I prejudged this book thinking it wouldn't be as good as the rest of the series because of a different narrator. My judgement was wrong! Justin Thomas James did a fantastic job with the narration! He did a great job with the voice of the AI as well!

Great Children of Titan short story

Really enjoying the new Children of Titan audio series and this third short stories by Rhett C. Bruno. I enjoyed the contrast from book one and two. Really creative and fun SF. This is one of three short Stories that delve into historic events that the main books just mention. This is world building at its best for me. If you enjoy the Main books get these shorts that explores events and history from the perspective of the characters that were there.

Too Brief but just right .

A thoughtful future tec piece , Clever but not overwritten . a little Vonnegut with just a dash of Heinlein.

I enjoyed This Long Vigil in part because this is a subject I have pondered many times myself. It answered a question or two for me.
I liked how clear and concise this story was written. I highly recommend this audio book. (Smile)

Waiting for the full book

💥💥💥💥💥 Five bangs.

Picked this one up because of Titanborn. It's not RC Bray, but Justin Thomas James does a great job.
