Summary

Lola has every reason to be interested in who Paddy de Courcy is marrying - because although she's his girlfriend, she definitely isn't the bride. Heartbroken, she flees the city for a cottage by the sea. But will her retreat prove as idyllic as she hopes?

Not if journalist Grace has anything to do with it. Grace knew Paddy a long time ago. But why can't she forget him? Grace's sister, Marnie, might have the answer but she also has issues with the past. Her family is wonderful but they can't take away memories of her first love: a certain Paddy de Courcy. What will it take for Marnie to be able to move on?

And what of the future Mrs de Courcy? Alicia is determined to be the perfect politician's wife. But does she know the real Paddy de Courcy?

Four very different women. One awfully charming man. And the dark secret that binds them all....

Love, love, loved this book

This is great, in fact so good I was feeling sad when only had an hour to go, I truly did not want it to end. It took a bit of getting to know the characters at the beginning and the understanding of how the book was written but once you had met them all you just wanted to be there with them helping them along with their troubles. I laughed a lot and cried too. I was completely lost. My husband has been in hospital for almost a week quite poorly and this book allowed me a bit of escapism from my own traumas. Enjoy it....

Just gets better the longer it goes on

Ignore any review that complains about the "clipped" style. it is only the style of 1 of the 4 main characters and you very quickly learn to enjoy it. the book is very witty with a very clever dark story that you just want to hear played out to the end. You want the girls to triumphs, and I'm a bloke!!

It is written with great humour and the characters just draw you in

Narrator is dreadful.

The narrator read as if the characters were 30 years older than they were.

The story could have been more punchy. Stretched out where less would have been more.

Felt a little disappointed

So I read this book over a decade ago, twice. It was my first Marian Keyes novel I read. I loved it so much that when my husband asked for a book to read, I gave him this one and he also read it! My paperback copy doesn't even have the cover anymore as it was so well read. So I was very much looking forward to the audiobook. I had completely forgotten the storyline as it has been so long since I read it, and have read many other Marian Keyes in the many years that have followed. But listening to it now, it just didn't really have the wow factor for me. It felt a little like it droned on and the ending was a little.... pointless? I did enjoy Caroline Lennon's narration, though.

Disappointing

The narrators staccato delivery made it just too difficult for me to follow the story of this book. It may be Marian Keyes ironic style, but it made the book hard work, so instead of looking forward to listening, unfortunately I gave up.

Passionate, moving and funny.

A mixture of fairy story moments, vibrantly comic situations and harrowing descriptions of abuse told with overwhelming intensity. Marian Keyes brings her characters to life with their joys and hurt with sheer intensity and compassionate humanity.

An engaging read ..

I really enjoyed this story, having been a bit dubious at the beginning. The characters are engaging and blossom as the plot unravels. The subjects covered are dealt with in a hard hitting yet at the same time sympathetic way. Well narrated.

Takes a little while to get in to

As a big fan of Marian Keyes, I felt compelled to write a short review following the negative ones, admittedly it took a while to get in to the book, but stick with it , I think it’s worth it. I was so sad listening to Marnie’s story but there’s so much humour in the book to balance it out. Narrator was great.

Stick with it!

Thought I didn’t like it… stuck with it and very glad I did! Really enjoyed and a little sad it’s over.
