About this listen

Missing Game of Thrones? Dare to "be pulled into political intrigues, watch new gods replace old, and witness fortunes rise and fall and rise again" (Book Riot).

A classic series for a new generation of fantasy adventure fans, Thieves' World® paved the way for the shared-world anthology tradition with epic worldbuilding, unforgettable characters, and nonstop action thanks to the legendary authors who contribute to it.

The series' groundbreaking debut features stories by John Brunner, Lynn Abbey, Poul Anderson, Andrew J. Offutt, Robert Lynn Asprin, Joe Haldeman, Christine DeWees, and Marion Zimmer Bradley, who populate the lawless city of Sanctuary with orphans and wizards, fortune tellers and emperors, merchants and madams, spies, assassins, and, of course, thieves.

Maybe this narrator is good for other forms of storytelling or audiobooks (non-fiction they might excel at!), but here the performance is dreadful. The stories themselves are fantastic - and foundational - fantasy yarns, but you'll struggle to enjoy them. Best bet: listen to the preview, and if you think you can deal with a few hours of that, then it might be worth giving this collection a go.

Great stories, awful narration

I was delighted to come across audiobooks of the Thieves’World anthologies I loved back in the days when they were first published, but only made it 20 minutes into the first one, before they were totally ruined for me by the most appalling amateur narration I have ever come across.

Ruined by appalling amateur narration

I have been enthralled with the world and characters of Thieves World since discovering Sanctuary in the 80's, collecting and devouring each volume as it was released.
The tales in this first volume set the city scale and tone well, as each author weaves stories intertwined with each others characters. It was good to get a different reading of certain characters names, to how I had always pronounced them.
If I had a quibble, it would be that the narrator needs some guidance at times in his delivery, as it can come across a bit like a machine gun fireing words, and the impact can be lost. I'm sure he will improve as he works his way through the series.

Well written fantasy
