Summary

The 60th birthday party of Silas Kane was marred by argument and dissension among his family. And then, the morning after the celebrations, Kane is found dead at the foot of a cliff. The theory that Silas accidentally lost his way in the fog is confirmed when the coroner returns a verdict of death by misadventure.

But then Kane's nephew and heir is murdered and threats are made on the next in line to the fortune, throwing a new and sinister light on Kane's death. All clues point to an elderly lady of eighty as the killer. But as the redoubtable Superintendent Hannasyde delves further into the case he discovers that nothing is quite as it seems.

Great story spoilt by narration

What did you like best about this story?

I was really looking forward to having the Georgette Heyer detective novels in audio, having read them in the past. This one is a good story.

How could the performance have been better?

Very poor - over-enunciated with pauses in strange places and some odd pronunciation. I won't be buying any more of this series.

Clever story, poor performance!

Would you try another book written by Georgette Heyer or narrated by Ulli Birvé?

I would certainly try another Georgette Heyer book but would not buy another read by this narrator.

Who was your favorite character and why?

My favourite character was Rosemary Kane, as she was so unremittingly awful!

What didn’t you like about Ulli Birvé’s performance?

I have never heard a worse audio narration. The accents she adopted and her pronunciation were extremely peculiar and she often put the emphasis on the wrong word. This really spoilt the book for me.

You didn’t love this book--but did it have any redeeming qualities?

I thought the story was cleverly constructed and amusingly written.

Only for Georgette Heyer Fans

This audiobook is really badly read. The speaker seems to struggle with syntax and therefore the text is often not understandable at the first listening. Honestly, it’s more the quality of a libervox audiobook, which is for free. The story is a typical Georgette Heyer mystery with the typical high society set up. Her characters are well developed and would appear more humorous, if the reading wouldn’t be so off. It is imao not her best story though, as she seems to rush at the end and stumbles over coherences ( time differences). But if you are a G.H. Fan, you may be able to overhear the unprofessional reading and enjoy the story.

Narrator

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I found the narrator OK but what I had to do was move the speed up to 1.25 on my I pad. It seemed funny at first but soon got used to.

What was one of the most memorable moments of They Found Him Dead?

I couldn't understand why the author had to keep calling Mr. this and then call them by their Christian name. This was done all through the book and I had to keep my whits about me to realise who she was referring to.

What does Ulli Birvé bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

I thought she did a good job. I don't read books so to listen to someone doing all the voices is great to me. See above about the speed issue/

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No way. It was too long. Not the book, I mean to listen to in one sitting.

Any additional comments?

I find Georgette Heyer's books very relaxing.

Amazing Story!

So far, in my opinion, this is the best Inspector Hannisyde novel thus far! (Superintendent really!) And they are all rather good!

Nothing is as it seems, yet everyone - except for one 😳 - is completely genuine…(in their own way). Well worth listening to… I'm off to read the last in the series, then onto Inspector Hemmingway.

Heyer's classic mysteries are ripe & delicious

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes. For any fan of the classic Golden Age mystery, this is great. I am actually rereading them. Witty, clever plot and likable and despicable characters.

What other book might you compare They Found Him Dead to and why?

I suppose all of hers are similar in that they follow traditional mystery lines and I like this.

What does Ulli Birvé bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

A wonderful reader. Just perfect. Brings the story to life.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It made me laugh as I enjoy truly witty dialogue and plot twists. This book has both.

Any additional comments?

A most delightful read. If only the good Ms. Heyer had written more mysteries and less romances. Those are okay, but the mystery books are far superior.

Superlative narration and fun mystery

This is an old fashioned who-dunnit, with the twists and turns of plot and colorful characters. Ulli Birve's ability to make each character, including 15 yr. old "Terrible TImothy," sound like you imagine them to be, makes this a wonderful audible.

Georgette the genius

I've read a bunch of her historical romances, now I'm finding these delightful little mysteries may be even better. Ms. Heyer seems to throw in some comedy and romance just to keep it light. I love the silly, selfish characters the best, such fun to laugh at. Worth a credit.

I just couldn't get very excited about this book. It was a bit dry for me.

A fairly good mystery

The multiple murders kept me guessing, yet somehow the ending seemed anticlimactic. More than anything I enjoyed the fine narration. Birve does an excellent job with both male and female voices. Her characterization of Rosemary was laugh out loud funny.

What a disappointment

I am besotted with Georgette Heyer the Regency romance novelist. Thought I would try Georgette Heyer the mystery writer. What a snooze. The culprit is easily identifiable early on, the characters -- including the protagonist(s) -- barely developed, and the whole thing lacks the sparkle that I associate with Heyer's other work. Not my cup of tea.

Cozy, fun, nicely written and read

The story was a perfect companion to a day spent at home. The story was nicely written. It kept me guessing until the very end. The reader was fantastic and I enjoyed her performance, seamless transition between the voices of the different characters.
