Summary

Royce Melborn is a superb thief, his partner; Hadrian Blackwater is a skilled mercenary. They make a profitable living as agents-for-hire to wealthy nobles until someone sets them up to take the blame for the murder of the king. Sentenced to death, the two are saved by an unlikely woman with a simple demand that will change the course of a kingdom, and the foundation of an empire.

Its not Game.Of Thrones-but I really enjoyed this.

Having complained that the actor narrating the Game of thrones books uses cliched voices and then changed accents/voices mid story GRRRHHH..However Tim Gerard Reynolds is FANTASTIC and consistent. Sullivan's writing is a league or two lower than Martins, but the story follows on to the next two volumes and concludes quite well, but there is an option to re-enter the world after that I believe but i have not done so..yet
only quibble would be that when he write a romantic scene ( twice through out the 3 books) it's excruciating...too long..like a teenager dreaming an encounter, rather that a genuine adult encounter.
I took this on a chance, then bought the two sequels..well that's not the exact word as they are ll one story ..INSTALLMENT...Give it go

Light Entertainment

Story – 4/5

I may have been a little too generous with my star rating on this one. It lacks originality, it can be over detailed with description in places and then provides barely anything at all in others and it does feel a bit episodic. Even despite all these issues though, I still found it highly entertaining. Some of the characters are especially likeable and humorous, which I think is this story’s strong point. The young Prince’s character is developed very nicely.

You actually get 2 for 1 when it comes to this story, as it is in fact an omnibus of 2 originally published stories. You will notice the distinct ending of one, and the start of the other when you are listening. The First half/story is definitely the stronger of the 2, and will be the reason I continue with the rest of the series, but the second didn’t continue with the over-arching story enough in my opinion, although it did hint towards it here and there.

I would recommend it to fans of the genre who are looking for a light, entertaining read – but it isn't ground-breaking in my opinion.

Performance – 3.5/5

Tim Gerard Reynolds is a good narrator. He performs the story very well, and the vast majority of the characters have a distinct voice. I did find that they merged a bit during scenes with heavy dialogue, but the story was easy enough to follow and so it didn’t have a negative effect.

This audiobook was clearly copied from the CD version, as you still get the “Change to disk 2” comments through it. I thought this was a bit sloppy from the production company personally – and not something that I have come across before.

Overall – 4/5

Ok as fantasy goes

What did you like best about Theft of Swords? What did you like least?

The story is reliable epic fantasy of the newer style - i.e. no wide eyed innocent hero, but a pair of sell-swords out to redeem themselves after a botched job. Enjoyable, trundles along at a decent pace, no unwelcome surprises a la George R R Martin!

Did the narration match the pace of the story?

The narration is, unfortunately, laboured. Is seems as though the reader is trying to be careful to get all the words right and in the correct order, meaning it sounds pedantic and slow. He also makes some glaring errors with pronunciation which, although amusing at first, began to really annoy me.

Any additional comments?

Worth a listen if you have a few free credits but don't put it at the top of your wish list.

Love the story

This audiobook has been a great companion during by long hour in the gym, trying to loose a few pounds before summer. On a few occasions I run a few miles more to listen the store just a litter bit longer! What a pity that book 2 is not available on audiobooks. Hopefully I will read it quickly and come back to the exercise regime with book 3 🤩

Basic but really good

The plot is basic although has the potential to progress alot as the series moves on. Really enjoyed listening to it, well written and very entertaining.

Heirs and Thraces...

A tale with twists and turns... of Princesses Empresses “dragons” and knights...

Each chapter solicited responses... I dare you to listen and not make comments to the characters or about them...

A thoroughly engaging start to the journey with Royce and Hadrian.

Great old school fantasy done well!!

Very enjoyable story with great characters. Better Dungeons & Dragons style novel than the actual D&D novels themselves.

Just couldn't get in with the narrator

What disappointed you about Theft of Swords?

Its irritating and may be only me but I just didn't like the narrator. It reminded me a little of watching Portland Bill as a child. Some bits sort of remind me of Bill & Ben. Again it might be only me but I honestly gave it a few hours but the inflections and voices annoyed me to the point of stopping.

Would you ever listen to anything by Michael J. Sullivan again?

I don't know as I couldn't get away from the narration.

How could the performance have been better?

I don't know that it was bad as such. It just didn't agree with me.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Disappointment.

Any additional comments?

Give the narrator a try before you buy. It could just be me but I didn't like it.

Two books in one : Slight Spoiler review

The books are light entertainment, with some larger world building. I loved listning to these stories and the duo is very entartaining. Two books in one

SPOILER about a charachter
I fell in love with the first book, in this series. It had everything. The second book, was more of a dissapointment. Micheal J. Sullivan is a wonderful writer and person. However the two main story girls in the second book are poorly written. The first book had the princess who truly intrested me, she was a wonderful addition. then in the second book she became annoying repetative, dumb. She kept telling she was a loner and one of the boys instead of showing with story. We already as a reader knew this about her in the first book. I think maybe Sullivan was afraid we were all dumb, and decided to make it painfully clear. Though this ruined the story, all her chapthers were compleatly unintresting. In a book about the coolest duo in forever, it really was not much of them in the second book.

It is an unabridged version. And I found this to be too long. Narrator was fantastic.
