Summary

Fr. Benedict shows how we can tend with love to the wounds of the Church and of the victims of the failure of the Church. He applies the wounds to the contemporary Church and to the suffering of the people of God and our culture as a whole. He points out that the abuse scandals in the Church have caused horrible harm to the victims, their families and the believing community. The people of God should at this critical juncture show gratitude and support to priests who are living up to their commitments and who are heartbroken by the sins of their fellow priests. Another wound to Christ's body is the betrayal of truth that permeates almost every aspect of our culture. Promiscuity, abortion, violence, and injustice are either trivialized or proclaimed as good. Perhaps, the most heartbreaking abandonment of truth has taken place within the Church where there is a colossal ignorance of the Gospel. The people of God need to be equipped with the truth so that they can combat error.
