Story
Ross Edgley famously ran a marathon pulling a 1.4-tonne car and climbed a rope the height of Everest (8,848 m), after living with Yamabushi warrior monks in Japan and partaking in Shamanic pain rituals with fire ants in the Amazon jungle. On his epic 1,780-mile journey around Great Britain, which lasted 157 days, Ross swam through giant jellyfish, arctic storms, ‘haunted’ whirlpools and polluted shipping lanes, going so hard, and so fast, his tongue fell apart.

Summary
The Sunday Times best seller.
How to train for anything and everything, anywhere and everywhere.
The World's Fittest Book is set to become every fitness enthusiast's bible. Dubbed the body's complete user guide, it will become the go-to resource for learning all you need to know about building muscle, losing fat, eating (healthy) cake and unlocking your superhuman physical potential.
Packed with workouts the author tried and tested in the pursuit of multiple world records, it's more than a book, it's the greatest training tool ever written! Designed for anyone who wants to make permanent and lasting changes to their food and fitness, it's the first book to combine the teachings, tips and tricks of Olympic and world champions into one easy to follow resource.
This book will show you how it's possible to:
- Live below 10 percent body fat with the aid of chocolate and Mayan secrets
- Add 27 percent more muscle mass, courtesy of tips from world heavyweight champions
- Increase speed by 10 percent, thanks to gold medal winning Olympic sprinters
- Squat, deadlift and bench weights you never dreamed of lifting, with the guidance of the world's strongest men
- Improve endurance capacity by 60 percent, thanks to the knowledge of world champions in multi endurance-based sports
...all of which the author has achieved during the 10-year 'fitness pilgrimage' that has taken him around the globe.
Aiming to be the most eclectic and comprehensive fitness guide ever created, The World's Fittest Book is the sum and substance of over a decade of research and the collective wisdom of some of the greatest minds and athletic bodies in history. By learning the lessons within it, listeners will understand 'fitness' better than the vast majority of the population. Every chapter has an easy to digest workout within it and can be listened to individually. But if you want to listen to the stories and the science behind the routines, that's there, too.
Until now, there hasn't been a book covering such an ambitious range of areas, catering for the casual fitness enthusiast seeking clarity and guidance in their own gym routine and kitchen habits as well as the seasoned sportsperson who's hit a plateau and is searching for tips, tricks and tweaks they can make to their training and diet. This book changes that and will take you on a journey to whatever level of fitness you want to find.

The World's 'Toughest' Fitness Book to listen to!
TL/DR Some good advice, poorly delivered and hard to listen to and written in a way that not much if anything will stick. Not sure where the high reviews have come from with this book, avoid must be better fitness books out there.
Ross breaks down some foundational fitness principles throughout this book and has 'some' nuggets of advice based on sound research and tough personal experience. But there are too many negative points that let this audiobook down.
Firstly the narration of this book is poor, the author Ross Edgley does his own narration but it would have been better if he'd hired a professional to narrate it (But Ross is all about self-promotion in this book). He is slow, overly pronounces words and is overly dramatic in his storytelling. And sorry Ross but your voice is annoying to listen to, for a 9hr+ audiobook.
I like the fact this isn't a quick fix fitness book, and Ross attempts to distil the principles of fitness, but it's a long slow hard listen to get there.
He is overly descriptive in the storytelling aspect of this book which in my opinion adds little value to when he eventually gets around to the fitness principle tied to the story. I think the story about when he could not fold toilet paper after a climbing rope challenge was meant to be a joke, wish he put the effort into other more important areas of this book!
Can't help but feeling that he comes across a bit egotistical (boasting about the places he's visited and his GQ column, writing for men's health magazine, his tree-athlon, car pulling, rope climbing challenge, tractor pull, everybody he trains with is just the 'best/greatest!' in their field etc..)
While his long-winded stories add something to the book I think they should have been toned down and hard principles and advice been better treated. Each chapter seems to be 30 minutes of story time from Ross summed up in 5 minutes of fitness principle (should be the other way around).
The amount of times he narrates the link to his website is too much. Ross, I understand their a lot of diagrams and healthy recipes available you do not need to remind the listener every 5 minutes. He must give us his website address, at least 50 times plus throughout the book, one of the things you will remember by the time you finish this book (if you buy it) is his website address. And why to god do you have to narrate your recipes in the book (*facepalm*, Ross this is the time you can give your websites address out!)
In the book, he promotes the whey protein company he works for, and their awards etc... don't know what this has to do with giving good fitness advice.
Ross has written this book like his university dissertation, with all the references material fully narrated (These should be kept brief if given at all just put in the appendix). It's like he's trying to hit a word target for each chapter.
Has too many cringey and unnecessary quotes from famous people from Buddha to Bruce Lee.

Not for me
I can see it could be motivational for some, but I didn’t find hearing tales of the author’s athletic amazingness very inspirational for me.
I’m not a Royal Marine world-leading mega-fundraising globe-trotting legend. I don’t really even want to be and after 4 hours, I got bored hearing about one. I just like being ordinary, fairly fit and fairly healthy, and was hoping to be able to do that better.
All credit for the challenges, but not a book for me.

like an old joke you've heard to many times.
New and relevant info can fit on a sheet of A4, the rest is him waffling on about his fabulous life, he got on a plane and went some where, Wow! . And you get to hear about it. How meany times can a guy say his own name?. I didn't know cheese spoke.
Now the hard copy has work out programs which is helpful but nothing you can't find elsewhere and everywhere. There are also recipes to support your training, recipes using exotic expensive ingredients the kind you will have to Google.
I recommend Evolution by Joe Manganello , straight forward and effective.

The world's most 'less than mediocre' book
I really want to like this book. But it's really bad. It starts hopeful, when he says what he thinks is wrong with fitness magazines. They promise things that aren't realistic, they use cheap slogans etc. etc.
Here is the thing. The subtitle of the book 'promises' to be x% better in this and that. Well that's not true.
It's just a blatant lie.
1. Literally the only thing he mentions about endurance and running is to not heel strike.
2. He mentions random scientific articles.
3. Random recipes. Seriously 10 min long he talks about how to BBQ a steak. Nothing more.
4. Offers some random programs that suit everyone yet at the same time nobody.
5. Every few minutes he mentions his website which is almost completely a bunch of ads.
6. Uses this 'book' to promote his company.
6a. Here is the 'fun' part. While bashing highly processed foods he forgets that is the thing exactly what he sales on his site.
7. Every story chapter is the same 'here I am, totally out of place
8. Just like all those instagram and fb accounts... just cite either Buddha, Einstein or Emerson every now and then.
Ah well.. this list goes on and on.
This would have been nice as a blog or something. Bro science...
But if you've read my review you probably come to the conclusion this book is precisely what he bashes at the beginning. A fitness magazine.

Informative and easy listening.
I enjoyed this book very much. Ross Edgley provides knowledge through experience while breaking things down for anyone to understand.

Easy to follow, annoying reference to the website
Ross presents his philosophy and approach to training in a clear and easily digestible way. I appreciate his narration, although he constantly references his website, which gets tedious after getting a few chapters in. Regardless, I would recommend giving this a listen. The accompanying PDF has several great programs that have helped me progress in my training.
